Johnny Galecki is officially returning to acting after seven years. The Big Bang Theory star, who famously played Leonard Hofstadter, will make his comeback in Kowalski, a new stage production by Chicago’s Lookingglass Theatre Company.
Instead of returning to television or films, Galecki has chosen the theatre for his first acting project since stepping away from Hollywood. According to Variety, the play will run from September 19 to October 25.
Johnny Galecki To Play Tennessee Williams
Written by Gregg Ostrin and directed by Colin Hanlon, Kowalski is set in Provincetown in 1947. The play imagines the first meeting between legendary playwright Tennessee Williams and Hollywood icon Marlon Brando, exploring how that encounter influenced Williams’ iconic play A Streetcar Named Desire. Galecki will portray Tennessee Williams.
The Big Bang Theory Star On His Comeback
The actor revealed that the project felt like the right one to bring him back. He shared, “The planets aligned. Gregg’s writing, Colin’s vision, and the feeling that after seven years of quietly observing life, I finally had something new to bring back to the work. Add to that the privilege of portraying one of my artistic heroes, and it became impossible to say no.”
Playwright Gregg Ostrin added, “At its heart, ‘Kowalski’ is about the collision of extraordinary talents and the lasting impact those encounters can have on art and culture.”
Johnny Galecki’s Acting Career
Before The Big Bang Theory, Galecki appeared in Roseanne and films including National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, Prancer, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Vanilla Sky, Hancock, In Time and Rings. But it was Leonard Hofstadter that made him a global star.
For 12 seasons, Galecki played the lovable physicist alongside Jim Parsons, Kaley Cuoco, Simon Helberg, Kunal Nayyar and the rest of the cast. The role earned him an Emmy nomination and made him one of television’s most recognisable sitcom actors.
Why He Disappeared From Hollywood
After The Big Bang Theory ended, Galecki made a few appearances on The Conners before quietly stepping away from acting. He left California after nearly 30 years and moved to Tennessee, choosing to focus on family life and raising his children.
Apart from reuniting with Kaley Cuoco for a mobile game advertisement in 2025, Galecki has remained largely out of the spotlight. Now, after seven years away, he’s back. And while it isn’t the TV comeback many expected, fans will finally get to see Johnny Galecki acting once again.
