Netflix has decided not to move forward with a second season of The Boroughs, the sci-fi drama executive produced by the minds behind Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers.
The decision lands as something of a surprise especially since early conversations around renewal were already in motion. According to Deadline, a writers’ room for Season 2 had been opened which is often a strong signal that Netflix is leaning toward continuation. There were even early ideas being explored about filming Seasons 2 and 3 back-to-back which suggested long-term planning was briefly on the table.
But plans shifted after the show’s performance began to flatten following its debut window.
The Boroughs: Strong Cast, Strong Reviews But Weak Long-Term Traction
When The Boroughs launched, it came with serious weight behind it. The ensemble included big names like Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Denis O’Hare, Clarke Peters and Bill Pullman. This immediately positioned it as a prestige sci-fi entry.
The series, created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, also opened to strong critical reception. But audience numbers told a different story.
Often described as “Stranger Things with seniors,” the show pulled around 5.6 million views in its opening weekend. That figure rose to 9.5 million views in its first full week but momentum didn’t hold. By the following week, viewership dropped sharply to 3.7 million which is a decline that signalled weak long-tail engagement.
Despite the promising start, the drop-off made it harder for Netflix to justify continuing the story.
Why Netflix Made The Call
Industry expectations were high especially given the timing. The Boroughs followed the massive final season of Stranger Things which raised expectations that another Duffer-connected sci-fi project would instantly catch fire.
But that overlap may have worked against it. Alongside The Boroughs, the Duffers also released another paranormal project this year, Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen which Netflix has already classified as a limited series. That title also won’t continue because there is a speculation that audiences may be experiencing a bit of fatigue after the emotional end of Stranger Things.
As Deadline reported, internal discussions around renewal were active before performance trends started to dip.
Big Production Cost
Beyond viewership, cost also played a role. The Boroughs leaned heavily into visual effects and large-scale production design. This combined with its star-studded cast pushed it into a high-budget bracket.
For Netflix, that combination often requires strong and sustained viewership to justify additional seasons. In this case, the numbers reportedly didn’t support the investment.
The Boroughs: What Is The Plot?
The Boroughs was set in a seemingly peaceful retirement community hiding something far more unusual. A group of elderly residents is forced to band together when a mysterious, otherworldly force begins targeting the one thing they have left: time.
The cast also included Jena Malone, Carlos Miranda, Seth Numrich, and Alice Kremelberg.
Behind the scenes, the series was executive produced by the Duffer Brothers and Hilary Leavitt under Upside Down Pictures, along with Addiss, Matthews, and director Ben Taylor, who helmed multiple episodes including the pilot.
