The Boys Season 5 Ending Explained: Who Dies, Who Survives & What It Means for the Series Future

Season 5 of Amazon Prime’s fan favourite superhero series The Boys recently came to an end. However, the shocking finale which was filled with blood and gore seems to have divided fans. 

The Boys Season 5 Ending Recap 

Titled ‘Blood and Bone’, the season 5 finale of the Boys, finally brought resolution to the showdown between Billy Butcher and Homelander that’s been brewing for over five seasons. 

In a dramatic final standoff, Homelander pleads with Billy Butcher to end the cycle of violence, Billy stabs him fatally in the stomach. Homelander then dies in his arms. It is revealed that Kimiko stripped Homelander of his powers, making the fight one sided. 

A grief stricken Billy Butcher then tried to unleash a deadly virus. Billy then ended up dying at the hands of his mentee Hughie. Other villains like the Deep and Oh Father were also killed.  

The episode ends with Hughie and Annie starting a family together and with Kimiko moving away to France in honour of Frenchie’s memory. While Mother’s Milk takes in Ryan to care for him.

The Boys Season 5 Ending Explained

While dramatic, the season 5 finale of the Boys is consistent with the series overarching themes. It symbolises that revenge and violence consume people and choosing peace is always the better option. And by bringing closure to almost all the surviving characters, it marks a new beginning that’s more hopeful and optimistic.   

How Social Media Reacted 

Soon after it aired, fans of the Boys were quick to react to season 5 finale of the Boys. and it’s safe to say that the finale was widely panned, with many loyal viewers sharing their negative opinions. 

One X user, who goes by The Boys Out of Context Clips criticised it for the limited screen time given to Gen V characters. “Marie Moreau, Jordan Li and Emma Meyer had a total of 2 minutes and 30 seconds of screen time in #TheBoys Series finale. Totaling out to a near 5 minutes of screen time in all of Season 5”, they claimed. 

One of the greatest superhero tv shows that has ever been created and leading up to a big finale, just end it up feeling small. “I enjoyed it, but I did have high expectations. Why? Because of the marketing they had given us”, another user who goes by Zero (@zerowontmiss)  said. 

Another user, Alanis_8 also slammed the season 5 finale, stating “The Boys had it’s weakest season with an ok finale episode 5/10 for it ”. Some loyal viewers did defend the finale, but they seemed to be part of a vocal minority,

It quickly gained recognition for its cinematography, acting and a refreshing, satirical take on the superhero genre.
