The Diplomat is heading into its most dangerous chapter yet. Netflix has released the first trailer for Season 4 of the political thriller, bringing Keri Russell’s Kate Wyler face-to-face with Allison Janney’s President Grace Penn as a secret involving Russia’s most powerful weapon threatens to push the United States toward war.
The new season picks up with Kate dealing with the fallout from the previous season while her already complicated relationship with husband Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell) takes an even darker turn.
The trailer wastes little time revealing that Hal and Grace have been working together to steal what Kate describes as an apocalypse weapon from Russia. “You stole it,” Kate tells Hal after discovering what he and Grace have been plotting.
What Happens In The Diplomat Season 4 Trailer?
The Season 4 trailer immediately raises the stakes for Kate. After discovering the secret operation involving Hal and Grace, she questions just how far the president is willing to go to protect American interests. “Your tolerance for risk to human life seems higher than it was,” Kate tells Grace.
The response from White House Chief of Staff Billie Appiah (Nana Mensah) is equally unsettling. “You made a covert military incursion into an allies’ territory,” Kate warns. “The line moves,” Billie responds.
Why Are Kate Wyler And Grace Penn Clashing?
Kate and Grace already have a complicated political relationship, but Season 4 appears set to take their conflict to another level. Grace is now at the center of a conspiracy involving Hal and the theft of Russia’s most powerful weapon. Kate, meanwhile, has to determine how much of the operation she can expose without triggering an even larger international crisis.
The situation becomes even more dangerous because Hal is no longer simply Kate’s husband or former diplomatic partner. His alliance with Grace places him directly on the opposite side of a potentially catastrophic geopolitical conflict.
Kate also finds an unlikely ally in Todd Penn (Bradley Whitford), Grace’s husband. The two unite to try to stop the Grace-Hal alliance from changing the balance of power both internationally and inside the United States.
What Happens To Kate And Hal’s Marriage In The Diplomat Season 4?
The political crisis mirrors the personal one. According to Netflix’s Season 4 synopsis, two marriages are at the heart of the new story: Kate and Hal’s increasingly fractured relationship and Grace and Todd’s marriage.
Kate has spent much of the series trying to navigate the demands of international diplomacy while also attempting to save her marriage. Now, Hal’s involvement in Grace’s secret operation makes that even more difficult.
The trailer suggests Kate is no longer simply questioning Hal’s decisions. She is questioning whether she can trust him at all. At one point, Kate bluntly describes the danger of Hal and Grace working together.
Is The US Heading Toward War In The Diplomat Season 4?
The new trailer strongly suggests that the Russian weapon plot could have consequences far beyond Kate, Hal and Grace. The official Season 4 synopsis says the conspiracy to steal Russia’s most powerful weapon “hurtles the United States toward war.”
She has to prevent an international catastrophe while dealing with the collapse of her marriage and a White House that appears increasingly willing to take extraordinary risks. Creator and showrunner Debora Cahn has also warned viewers to be worried about the new season, teasing the possibility of people in power “horrifically misusing it.”
