Prime Video has officially announced that The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3 will premiere on November 11, giving fans their next major return to J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy universe. But that was not the only surprise. Ahead of Amazon’s annual Upfront presentation in New York, the streaming platform also confirmed that the sprawling fantasy drama has already been renewed for a fourth season.

The announcement arrived alongside a striking first look at Charlie Vickers’ Sauron wearing a dark crown, a visual that immediately sent Tolkien fans into speculation mode online.

The Rings of Power Season 3 to focus on Sauron’s rise

According to Prime Video, the upcoming season will move several years ahead of the events seen in Season 2 and place viewers directly in the middle of the growing war between the Elves and Sauron. The official synopsis hints that the new episodes will explore the Dark Lord’s mission to forge the One Ring, the object that eventually becomes central to The Lord of the Rings mythology.

Season 3 is expected to show Sauron consolidating power while attempting to dominate Middle-earth by binding its kingdoms and races to his will. The darker tone teased by Amazon suggests the series is finally entering the era longtime Tolkien readers have been waiting for.

Charlie Vickers, whose portrayal of Sauron became one of the most discussed aspects of the previous season, is expected to take centre stage in the upcoming chapter.

Prime Video renews The Rings of Power for Season 4

Even before Season 3 arrives, Amazon has already renewed the series for a fourth season, a sign of the company’s continued confidence in one of its most expensive and ambitious productions ever. Peter Friedlander, Head of Global Television at Amazon MGM Studios, described the series as one of Prime Video’s defining global projects.

“From the very beginning, this series has embodied the scale, ambition and cinematic storytelling that define Prime Video’s biggest global series,” Friedlander said while announcing the renewal. He also credited the global fan response for helping sustain the franchise’s momentum heading into its next phase.

Why The Rings of Power remains important for Prime Video

Set thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, The Rings of Power explores Middle-earth during its Second Age, a period filled with rising kingdoms, political alliances and the return of ancient evil. The series introduced viewers to locations like Númenor, Lindon and the Misty Mountains long before the journeys of Frodo Baggins and Aragorn. It also expanded Tolkien’s mythology by focusing on younger versions of familiar races and legendary figures.

Despite dividing audiences at times, the show remains a major success for Amazon. According to the company, Season 1 still stands as Prime Video’s biggest television launch ever, while Season 2 ranks among its most-watched returning series globally. The franchise’s continued expansion also reflects Hollywood’s ongoing appetite for large-scale fantasy storytelling following the global success of franchises like Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon.

With Sauron’s rise now taking centre stage and the One Ring finally entering the picture, The Rings of Power appears ready to move into its darkest and most ambitious phase yet.
