The Mosquito Bowl brings a remarkable true story from World War II to the screen. It follows four young American college football stars whose lives took a dramatic turn after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Instead of pursuing promising careers on the football field, the four men enlisted in the Marines and were sent towards the brutal reality of the Pacific war.
Directed by Peter Berg, the upcoming Netflix film is adapted from Pulitzer Prize winner Buzz Bissinger’s nonfiction book The Mosquito Bowl: A Game of Life and Death in World War II
What Is The Mosquito Bowl About?
The film follows John McLaughry, Bob Bauman, Tony Butkovich and David Schreiner, four talented college football players whose lives were transformed by the events of World War II.
McLaughry was a quarterback at Brown University, while Bauman and Schreiner played for the University of Wisconsin. Butkovich was a star at Purdue and had already established himself as an exceptional offensive player.
The attack on Pearl Harbor changed everything. The four young men chose to leave their sporting ambitions behind and enlist in the Marines which takes them from the world of college football into the Pacific Theater.
As they adapt to military life and prepare for combat, the story explores the friendship formed between the men and the enormous distance between the lives they had imagined for themselves and the reality they ultimately faced.
Is The Mosquito Bowl Based On A True Story?
Yes, The Mosquito Bowl is based on real events and real people. The film takes its story from Bissinger’s 2022 nonfiction book which examines college football players who enlisted during World War II and the remarkable game that brought many of them together shortly before the Battle of Okinawa.
The project also reunites Berg and Bissinger decades after their collaboration on Friday Night Lights. Bissinger wrote the nonfiction book that inspired the 2004 film which Berg directed and the story was later developed into the acclaimed television series.
For Berg and the cast, recreating the experiences of these real men came with a significant responsibility.
“These were real people. You work as hard as you can and believe in something bigger than yourself,” Nicholson says.
Who Plays The Four Football Stars In The Mosquito Bowl?
Nicholas Galitzine portrays John McLaughry, the Brown University quarterback whose leadership qualities extend from the football field into his military service.
Bill Skarsgård plays Bob Bauman, the larger-than-life Wisconsin player whose forceful personality makes him stand out both among his teammates and fellow Marines.
Ray Nicholson takes on the role of Purdue star Tony Butkovich, an exceptional athlete who had already made his mark by setting records for the university.
Tom Francis plays David Schreiner, another Wisconsin football player who brings a more thoughtful and strategic personality to the group.
The four actors developed a strong bond while filming, something Skarsgård compared to the brotherhood shared by football players and Marines.
“There’s camaraderie in football, camaraderie in the Marine Corps, and in our own small way, we became brothers,” says Skarsgård.
What Can Fans Expect From The Mosquito Bowl?
Peter Berg is known for films that put audiences close to the action, and The Mosquito Bowl appears to follow that same approach.
Galitzine has spoken about the demanding filming process, revealing that the actors relied only minimally on stunt doubles while working around explosions, fire and other intense conditions.
“The way Peter Berg wanted to make this movie means we’ve done pretty much everything ourselves with limited use of stunt doubles — explosives going off a couple feet from our faces, trees on fire, flames actually catching on us at points, the sounds of war right up close,” Galitzine says. “I’ve never experienced this kind of immersion before in my career.”
Who Is In The Mosquito Bowl Cast?
Along with Galitzine, Skarsgård, Nicholson and Francis, the film features an ensemble cast that includes Brent Comer and Dominic Bogart.
Berg directs and produces the movie, with Brian Grazer, Alex Gayner and Berg among the producers. Bissinger is also attached as an executive producer alongside Ezra Emanuel and Jeb Brody.
