Christopher Nolan is ready to bring one of history’s most celebrated stories to the big screen through The Odyssey and the final trailer makes it clear that audiences are in for a spectacular journey. Released by Universal Pictures ahead of the film’s July 17 theatrical debut, the new footage shows the most detailed look yet at Nolan’s ambitious adaptation of Homer’s classic epic.

The trailer shifts between massive battles, dangerous sea voyages and emotional reunions which tease the difficult road that awaits Odysseus as he fights to return to his family.

Matt Damon’s Odysseus Faces His Toughest Journey

Matt Damon plays Odysseus, the King of Ithaca, whose life changes after the Trojan War. Instead of returning home victorious, he is forced into a years long struggle filled with shipwrecks, mythical creatures, powerful gods and impossible choices.

Back in Ithaca, his wife Penelope, played by Anne Hathaway, and son Telemachus, portrayed by Tom Holland, continue to wait for his return while their kingdom falls into chaos.

The trailer also offers a closer look at Robert Pattinson’s Antinous, the leader of the suitors trying to seize Odysseus’ throne. One scene, Antinous taunts Telemachus by mocking the father he barely knew. Fans also get a glimpse of Zendaya who is portraying as the goddess Athena.

The preview wraps up with a countdown reading, “The epic arrives in 2 weeks.”

A Massive Ensemble Joins Christopher Nolan’s Epic

Apart from above-mentioned actors, The Odyssey also stars Charlize Theron as Calypso, and Lupita Nyong’o in dual roles as Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra. The ensemble also includes Himesh Patel, Mia Goth, John Leguizamo, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie and Elliot Page, along with Samantha Morton, Bill Irwin, Corey Hawkins, Logan Marshall-Green, James Remar and several others.

Christopher Nolan Pushes IMAX Technology Further

While Nolan is known for making visually ambitious films, The Odyssey marks another milestone in his career. Universal has described it as the first feature filmed entirely using IMAX cameras made possible by newly developed, lighter equipment that allowed the production to shoot in locations that were previously difficult to access.

Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, The Odyssey reunites the Oscar-winning filmmaker with Universal following the success of Oppenheimer. It is produced by Nolan and Emma Thomas under Syncopy.

The Odyssey is set to arrive in theatres on July 17, 2026.
