Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is all set to introduce audiences to one of Greek mythology’s most iconic stories. Based on Homer’s epic poem of the same name, the film follows the legendary journey of King Odysseus after the Trojan War and features several characters who play a crucial role in his return home.
Among them is Telemachus, played by Tom Holland. While Odysseus is the central hero of the story, Telemachus has a powerful arc of his own.
Who Is Telemachus?
In Greek mythology, Telemachus is the son of Odysseus, the King of Ithaca, and Queen Penelope. When his father leaves to fight in the Trojan War, Telemachus is still an infant. By the time Odysseus begins his long journey home, the young prince has grown up without ever truly knowing his father.
As the heir to the throne of Ithaca, Telemachus finds himself carrying responsibilities far beyond his age while waiting for news of Odysseus’ return.
Telemachus’ Journey In The Odyssey
At the beginning of The Odyssey, Telemachus struggles to protect his home as powerful suitors take over the royal palace. Believing Odysseus is dead, they pressure Queen Penelope to choose a new husband while wasting the kingdom’s wealth.
Encouraged by the goddess Athena, who appears in disguise as Odysseus’ trusted friend Mentor, Telemachus sets out on a journey to learn what really happened to his father. His travels take him to the kingdoms of Pylos and Sparta where he searches for answers.
The Father And Son Reunion
Telemachus’ search finally leads to the reunion he has long hoped for. After Odysseus secretly returns to Ithaca disguised as a beggar, father and son join forces to reclaim their kingdom.
Together, they plan an attack against the suitors who have occupied their palace.
Tom Holland Leads The Next Generation In Christopher Nolan’s Epic
Tom Holland takes on the role of Telemachus in Christopher Nolan’s adaptation with Matt Damon starring as Odysseus. The film also features Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Zendaya as Athena, Robert Pattinson as Antinous, Charlize Theron as Calypso, Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy, Jon Bernthal as Menelaus and Benny Safdie as Agamemnon.
The ensemble cast also includes Samantha Morton as Circe, Himesh Patel as Eurylochus, Elliot Page as Sinon and Bill Irwin as the Cyclops Polyphemus.
The Odyssey makes its way to the theatres on July 17.
