Owen Cooper’s name is now being floated in an unexpected place: the Spider-Man universe. Yes, you read that right. The young actor, who recently shot to fame with Netflix’s Adolescence, has been singled out by Tom Holland himself as someone who could potentially take over the iconic superhero role in the future.

In a chat with Esquire UK, Holland spoke about what he calls the “next generation” of Spider-Man. But he isn’t referring to multiverse characters like Miles Morales or Spider-Gwen. Instead, he is talking about a completely new Peter Parker who could eventually replace his version of the character once his run comes to an end.

Holland, who will be seen in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, also compared the idea to his own early days in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He said that Robert Downey Jr. supported him when he first stepped into the role and that he would like to offer the same kind of guidance to whoever follows after him, both on-screen and off-screen.

When asked about potential successors, he didn’t hesitate to mention Owen Cooper directly.

“Owen Cooper would be awesome. Obviously, he’s super-talented and the talk of the town right now,” he said.

Cooper’s rise in the industry has been unusually rapid. He gained major attention for his performance in Adolescence and became one of the youngest breakout stars in recent memory. At just 15, he made history by becoming the youngest male actor to win an Emmy for his debut acting role. He is now 16 and already moving on to bigger projects including the Wuthering Heights adaptation that was released in February.

His awards run has also been remarkable. The Warrington-born actor went on to become the youngest performer to win both a BAFTA Television Award for Best Supporting Actor and a Golden Globe in the same category.

Meanwhile, Holland also gave a brief idea of what Spider-Man: Brand New Day will look like tonally.

He described it as leaning heavily into mystery, saying, “This movie is a real mystery and for a large portion of the film, even Spider-Man is a little bit at odds and lost and is like, ‘What is going on?’”

“We’re just trying to find ways to make this movie feel like a detective movie,” he added.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is scheduled to release in theaters on July 31.
