Actor Varun Dhawan has landed in the middle of a social media controversy after videos from his recent visit to a temple in Mumbai triggered widespread debate online. The actor, who is currently promoting his upcoming comedy entertainer Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, was spotted visiting the temple earlier this week. Videos circulating across social media platforms showed Varun leaving the premises with a tilak on his forehead while briefly greeting paparazzi stationed outside.

However, instead of the visit itself, it was the actor’s outfit that quickly became the talking point online.

Why Varun Dhawan’s Temple Look Sparked Debate

In the viral clips, Varun was seen wearing a sleeveless vest paired with shorts, a casual look many social media users felt was inappropriate for a religious place. Soon after the videos surfaced online, reactions began flooding X and Instagram, with several users criticising the actor’s choice of clothing. Some argued that celebrities should set an example when visiting places of worship, while others accused the actor of treating the visit casually because of his celebrity status.

One viral post read, “The least Varun Dhawan could do is dress appropriately for the mandir.”

Another user questioned whether ordinary visitors would have been allowed entry dressed similarly, reigniting a familiar online conversation around celebrity privilege and double standards.

A few users even called the appearance a “PR stunt,” suggesting that the temple visit was timed strategically ahead of the release of his upcoming film.

Celebrity Temple Visits Frequently Become Social Media Flashpoints

Over the last few years, celebrity visits to temples, mosques and gurudwaras have increasingly turned into social media spectacles. What may once have remained a simple spiritual visit now often becomes a heavily discussed online moment, especially when photographs or videos are involved. From debates over footwear and clothing to accusations of publicity-driven devotion, Bollywood stars frequently find themselves judged not only for their actions but also for their appearance at religious places. In many Indian temples, dress codes are either formally enforced or culturally expected, particularly regarding sleeveless clothing and shorts. While some temples maintain strict entry rules, others leave such decisions more flexible, which often leads to public disagreements online whenever celebrities are involved.

At the same time, many users also defended Varun Dhawan, arguing that spirituality should not be reduced to clothing choices and that online outrage often becomes disproportionate when public figures are involved.

Varun Dhawan Busy With Upcoming Comedy Release

Amid the online chatter, Varun Dhawan is currently focused on the release of his upcoming film Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, directed by his father David Dhawan. The comedy entertainer also stars Pooja Hegde, Mrunal Thakur and Maniesh Paul in key roles.

The recently released trailer hints at a chaotic comedy built around romance, misunderstandings and double lives. Varun reportedly plays a man caught between two relationships while trying to manage a crumbling marriage and a complicated love affair. The film has already generated attention for its old-school commercial Bollywood tone, reminiscent of classic David Dhawan entertainers from the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Social Media Reactions Continue To Divide Fans

As clips from the temple visit continue circulating online, reactions remain sharply divided. While critics continue debating whether celebrities should follow stricter etiquette at religious places, others feel the outrage says more about internet culture than the actor himself.

For now, Varun Dhawan has not publicly reacted to the controversy. But with his film release around the corner, the viral moment has once again shown how quickly even a routine celebrity appearance can spiral into a national social media discussion.
