With the release of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, Homer’s ancient Greek epic is back in the spotlight. Starring Matt Damon as Odysseus and Anne Hathaway as Penelope, the film brings the legendary tale of Odysseus’ long and dangerous journey home to a new generation of moviegoers.
But Nolan’s film is far from the first to draw inspiration from The Odyssey. The Return (2024)
Starring Ralph Fiennes as Odysseus, The Return offers a more intimate and psychological take on Homer’s story. Rather than focusing on the hero’s adventures, the film explores his emotional struggle after finally returning to Ithaca, where he must reclaim his kingdom from the suitors competing for Penelope’s hand.
O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)
Joel and Ethan Coen gave Homer’s epic a unique twist by setting it in the American South during the Great Depression. George Clooney plays Ulysses Everett McGill, an escaped convict whose journey back to his wife mirrors Odysseus’ long voyage home. The film is packed with modern versions of characters and events from the original epic.
The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2004)
It may not seem like an obvious adaptation but The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie borrows several elements from The Odyssey. SpongeBob and Patrick embark on a perilous quest to recover King Neptune’s stolen crown, encountering sea monsters, a Cyclops-like creature and a series of obstacles that echo Odysseus’ mythical adventures.
Cold Mountain (2003)
Based on Charles Frazier’s bestselling novel, Cold Mountain follows Confederate soldier Inman, played by Jude Law as he deserts the Civil War and undertakes a long, dangerous journey home to reunite with his love, Ada, played by Nicole Kidman. While not a direct adaptation, its central theme of a soldier struggling to return home closely mirrors Homer’s epic.
The Warriors (1979)
Walter Hill’s cult classic takes the classic story to the streets of New York City. After being falsely accused of murder, a street gang must cross hostile territory to make it back home. Their dangerous journey through enemy-controlled neighbourhoods reflects the structure of Odysseus’ journey across the Mediterranean.
