Sanskruti Jayana stepped into Bollywood with a character she had never imagined playing. The actor made her screen debut as Satyabhama in Krishnavataram Part 1: The Heart, a film that looks at Lord Krishna’s life through the perspective of one of the women closest to him. But interestingly, when director Hardik Gajjar first approached her for the role, Jayana herself knew very little about Satyabhama.
Speaking at the We Women Want Conclave & Shakti Awards 2026, the actress opened up about how she landed the role and what happened when she first heard that she would be playing Satyabhama. “When the director called me for the first time to tell me that I was supposed to play Satyabhama, I was taken aback. I never knew about Satyabhama. That’s very sad,” Jayana said.
Who Is Sanskruti Jayana?
Before Krishnavataram, Sanskruti Jayana did not have a filmography to her name. The film marks her acting debut with Jayana taking on the role of Satyabhama opposite Siddharth Gupta, who plays Lord Krishna.
Jayana is also the granddaughter of Anandiben Patel, the Governor of Uttar Pradesh and former Chief Minister of Gujarat, while her mother Anar Patel is a social entrepreneur. However, the actor’s entry into cinema has increasingly been discussed on its own terms, particularly after her performance in Krishnavataram.
Sanskruti Jayana On Playing Satyabhama?
In an earlier interaction, Jayana described Satyabhama as someone who was “unapologetic”, courageous and willing to speak her mind. In a media interaction, she said, “My takeaway from Satyabhama would be that she stood for what’s right. Her name, Satya, was added to Bhama because she was never afraid to stand for what was right, even if it meant going against her father or speaking her mind in front of Krishna as well. So that is something I took away from her, standing up for something that is right. Also, she was unapologetic, so courageous, and so real. She taught me to feel everything, to embrace every emotion. And her love for Krishna is something that has stayed with me. The love for Krishna will always be there in Sanskruti’s heart as well. I came close to Krishna because of Satyabhama, and that is the most divine gift she gave me.”
Why Is Satyabhama At The Centre Of Krishnavataram?
What makes Krishnavataram Part 1 different from many familiar retellings of Krishna’s story is its perspective. The film does not simply tell Krishna’s story from his point of view. Its official description states that Satyabhama tells the story, with the narrative following her perspective as she watches Krishna’s life unfold.
The film draws from Raam Mori’s Gujarati book Satyabhama and explores Krishna’s relationships with Satyabhama, Radha and Rukmini.
