Sam Neill, best known for playing Dr Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park franchise, died on July 13 in Sydney, Australia, at the age of 78. According to his family, Neill’s death was sudden and unexpected. In a statement, they said he passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones.
The family also made one thing clear: Neill was not battling cancer when he died. After years of treatment for a rare and aggressive form of blood cancer, he had achieved remission and had remained cancer-free in the months leading up to his death.

In their statement, Neill’s family described his passing as “sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer-free.”
The actor had spent the last few years fighting stage-three angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL), a rare and aggressive type of blood cancer. However, experimental treatment successfully pushed the disease into remission.
Even after his diagnosis, Neill continued acting, attending public events and regularly sharing humorous updates from his New Zealand vineyard and farm.
Sam Neill’s Cancer Battle
Neill publicly disclosed his diagnosis in 2023 through his memoir, Did I Ever Tell You This? He was diagnosed with stage-three angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma in 2022. Initially, chemotherapy helped control the disease, but when it stopped working, doctors enrolled him in a clinical trial for a newer medication.
The treatment proved successful, allowing the actor to return to work while continuing long-term medication. Despite facing a life-threatening illness, Neill remained remarkably optimistic. He wrote, “I’m not afraid of dying,” and added, “What annoys me is the thought of missing out.”
What Is Angioimmunoblastic T-cell Lymphoma?
Angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, or AITL, is one of the rarest forms of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. It affects T lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell that plays a key role in the immune system. The disease is known for progressing quickly and can spread to the lymph nodes, spleen, bone marrow and other organs.
Common symptoms include swollen lymph nodes, persistent fever, unexplained weight loss, night sweats, severe fatigue, itchy skin rashes and recurring infections. Because many of these symptoms resemble common illnesses, diagnosis often requires blood tests, imaging scans and a lymph node biopsy.
While there is no universal cure, treatment options include chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, stem cell transplants and clinical trials, depending on the patient’s condition.

While millions remember him as Dr. Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park films, his filmography extended far beyond dinosaurs.
