DC Studios co-chief James Gunn has put an end to speculation surrounding the future of Matt Reeves’ The Batman franchise. The filmmaker recently addressed rumours claiming that The Batman: Part II and The Batman: Part III would be filmed back-to-back, making it clear that those reports are not true.
The speculation had gained traction online as fans eagerly awaited updates on Robert Pattinson’s return as the Caped Crusader. However, Gunn quickly shut down the claims during a recent Q&A session on Threads.
Responding to a fan who asked whether the next two films in Matt Reeves’ Batman saga would be shot simultaneously, Gunn gave a short but definitive answer: “I can deny.”
His response effectively ended weeks of online speculation about the production plans for the highly anticipated sequels.
The Batman: Part II Continues To Move Forward
While The Batman: Part II will not be filmed alongside a third instalment, the sequel is steadily progressing.
Earlier this week, director Matt Reeves shared camera test footage from Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the UK, giving fans their first behind-the-scenes glimpse of the upcoming film. The footage featured Robert Pattinson suited up as Batman, the Batmobile and a snowy backdrop, hinting at a darker, winter-set Gotham City.
The sequel has faced multiple delays since it was first announced, but recent updates suggest development is finally gathering momentum.
Last month, James Gunn confirmed that the screenplay for The Batman: Part II had been completed, marking a major milestone for the project. Earlier reports, including a letter sent to Warner Bros. Discovery shareholders and cited by Deadline, also indicated that production was expected to begin in the spring.
When Will The Batman: Part II Release?
Despite the positive production updates, fans will have to wait a little longer to see Robert Pattinson return as Batman.
Warner Bros. recently pushed back the film’s release date, with The Batman: Part II now scheduled to hit theatres on February 18, 2028. The delay came as Matt Reeves continued refining the sequel while sharing occasional behind-the-scenes teasers to keep fans engaged.
Released in 2022, The Batman was both a critical and commercial success, earning praise for its grounded detective story, noir-inspired visuals and Robert Pattinson’s darker take on the iconic DC superhero. The film also starred Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Colin Farrell as the Penguin, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon and Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth.
