For millions of fans, Jim Parsons will always be Sheldon Cooper – the brilliant physicist with a love for science, comic books and the iconic “Bazinga!” But while The Big Bang Theory made him one of television’s biggest stars, Parsons has now revealed that life behind the scenes wasn’t nearly as perfect as it looked.
Looking back at the show’s incredible 12-season run, the actor admitted that even during some of the biggest moments of his career, he was quietly struggling. Speaking on the All Out with Jon Dean podcast, Parsons confessed, “I look back now and realize that there were many ways, at some of the best moments of my life, I was miserable. I was not happy. I was stressed.”
Jim Parsons Says Success Came At A Cost
Parsons explained that he constantly felt like he had to keep everything under control. The pressure of leading one of television’s biggest sitcoms left him believing that every success came only because he never stopped pushing himself.
“I felt that there was so many plates I was supposed to be keeping in the air and that the success and the good things of life that were happening were only due to this overworking… discipline and whatever,” he said.
The 53-year-old added that, with hindsight, he wouldn’t want to relive that period of his life “for any amount of money.”
Why Jim Parsons Left The Big Bang Theory
When The Big Bang Theory ended in 2019 after 279 episodes, many fans were shocked. Rumours quickly spread that the sitcom concluded because Parsons was ready to move on. Years later, the actor confirmed there was no dramatic fallout behind the decision.
“It’s both as complex and as simple as just feeling innately that it was time,” he told Entertainment Weekly in 2019. He added, “There is no negative reason to stop doing Big Bang. It felt like we have been able to do this for so many years now, it doesn’t feel like there is anything left on the table.”
Sheldon Cooper Still Follows Him
Even after leaving the sitcom, Parsons says Sheldon Cooper remains a huge part of his life. However, his relationship with the character has changed over the years. “I’ve been changing my relationship to it. It’s evolving, and it gets better all the time. What I feel is better, what I feel is healthier,” he shared.

Created by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, The Big Bang Theory followed the lives of Sheldon Cooper, Leonard Hofstadter, Penny, Howard Wolowitz and Raj Koothrappali. What began as a quirky sitcom eventually became one of television’s biggest success stories, running for 12 seasons and 279 episodes.
Parsons won four Primetime Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Sheldon Cooper, while the cast reportedly saw their salaries rise from $60,000 per episode in Season 1 to around $900,000 per episode by the final season.
