Honey Trehan has been one of Bollywood’s most popular behind-the-scenes figures for nearly two decades. He is best known as a casting director and long-time creative associate of filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj. Honey Trehan played a key role in shaping some of Hindi cinema’s most acclaimed films before stepping behind the camera himself.
Today, he is once again in the spotlight with Satluj (originally titled Punjab 95). The Diljit Dosanjh-starrer Satluj has stirred a major debate over censorship after its brief release on ZEE5.
Early life and journey into films
Born on October 4, 1978, in Sagar, Madhya Pradesh, Honey Trehan did not initially aspire to become a filmmaker. He entered the industry as an assistant director before discovering his passion for casting. His eye for talent and commitment to finding actors who best suited a character helped him excel in Hindi cinema.
The man behind some of Bollywood’s finest casting
Honey Trehan is considered one of industry’s celebrated casting directors. Over the years, he was part of films like Makdee, Maqbool, Omkara, Kaminey, Delhi Belly, Talvar and Udta Punjab. He has often been credited with introducing fresh faces and helping shape flawless performances.
Vishal Bhardwaj’s trusted creative partner
Much of Honey Trehan’s career unfolded alongside Vishal Bhardwaj. The duo collaborated for nearly 20 years, with Trehan serving as assistant director and casting director on many of Bhardwaj’s films.
Within the industry, Trehan was often described as Bhardwaj’s “right-hand man.” Along with filmmaker Abhishek Chaubey, the trio also worked under the banner of MacGuffin Pictures.
The ‘Sapna Didi’ fallout
Trehan’s directorial debut was originally meant to be Sapna Didi. It was a gangster drama inspired by a chapter from S. Hussain Zaidi’s Mafia Queens of Mumbai. The film was to star Deepika Padukone and the late Irrfan Khan, with Vishal Bhardwaj producing the project.
However, in December 2017, Bhardwaj announced that he would replace Trehan as director due to “creative differences.” The project eventually stalled after Irrfan Khan’s illness.
Reinventing himself with Raat Akeli Hai
Instead of waiting for another opportunity, Trehan made his directorial debut with Raat Akeli Hai in 2020. The Netflix crime thriller, starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Radhika Apte, received praise.
Honey Trehan also ventured into film production. He was associated with Sharmaji Namkeen, remembered as the final film of veteran actor Rishi Kapoor. After his death during production, the film was completed with Paresh Rawal taking over the role.
Satluj and the censorship controversy
Trehan’s latest directorial venture, Satluj is based on the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra. Starring Diljit Dosanjh, the film shows Khalra’s investigation into alleged illegal cremations and enforced disappearances during Punjab’s militancy years.
The film has faced a long battle with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), and the makers claimed that they were asked to implement 127 cuts. Satluj quietly premiered on ZEE5 in July 2026, but was removed within 48 hours.
