Why Is Michael J. Fox Receiving The Bob Hope Humanitarian Award?

The Bob Hope Humanitarian Award recognises individuals whose work has made a significant difference beyond entertainment.

For Fox, the honour recognises his “transformative contributions to Parkinson’s disease research and advocacy.” His work in the area has been closely connected to his own experience with the disease which he was diagnosed with at just 29 years old.

After publicly revealing his Parkinson’s diagnosis in 1991, Fox eventually turned his experience into a major advocacy effort. In 2001, he established the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research which has gone on to raise more than $2.5 billion for research aimed at finding better treatments and ultimately a cure.

Speaking to People, Fox acknowledged that living with the disease has become more difficult over time, but said he remains committed to the cause.

“Of course, things have gotten harder over the years,” he told the magazine. “I’m privileged to commit my time and energy to bringing everything I’ve got to help cure this disease.”

His performance also earned him major awards recognition. Fox received his first Emmy nomination for the role and won Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series at the 38th Primetime Emmy Awards in 1986.

He was only 25 years old at the time and made Emmy history with the victory by becoming the youngest actor to win the award.
