Shubhra Shetty and filmmaker Anurag Kashyap have been in a relationship for nearly 11 years. While the couple has largely kept their personal life away from the spotlight, they recently opened up about their relationship, their age difference and whether marriage is on the cards.
In a conversation with Janice Sequeira, Shubhra and Anurag spoke candidly about how their relationship began, the insecurities surrounding their age gap and why they have chosen to continue their relationship without necessarily putting a label on it.
Who Is Shubhra Shetty?
Shubhra Shetty previously worked as an assistant director at Phantom Films, the production house co-founded by Anurag Kashyap. The two were first spotted together in 2015, while Kashyap publicly confirmed their relationship in 2018.
Shubhra has largely maintained a low profile compared with her filmmaker partner. She is in her 30s, while Kashyap is 53, making their age difference around 20 years.
The couple’s shared interests in films, books and film festivals reportedly played an important role in bringing them closer. While they initially tried to keep their relationship private, their appearances together eventually made their romance public.
How Did Anurag Kashyap And Shubhra Shetty’s Relationship Begin?
Speaking about their love story, Shubhra revealed that Kashyap was the one who first expressed his feelings. According to her, the filmmaker told her that his life experiences helped him understand what he felt for her. At the same time, he did not want her to feel pressured into the relationship.
Kashyap encouraged Shubhra to experience life and make her own choices. He reportedly told her that she could go out, see the world and find her way back to him if that was what she wanted.
What Is The Age Difference Between Anurag Kashyap And Shubhra Shetty?
The couple has an age gap of around 20 years, something they have both acknowledged over the years. Kashyap recently admitted that he became increasingly conscious of their age difference as he grew older, particularly because Shubhra continued to look much younger.
He recalled reaching a point where he tried to distance himself from her because of his own insecurities. “We’ve had our moments. We have been self-conscious. I’ve been more conscious.. And not just more conscious, at one point, I became so conscious, I was trying so hard to push it away. There was a point because her face doesn’t show her age. She still looks the same. She doesn’t look her age. So the thing is, the more I grew older and she kept looking the same, that’s when I became slightly conscious,” he said.
What Did Shubhra Shetty’s Parents Think About Their Age Gap?
Shubhra also spoke about her parents’ reaction to the relationship. She acknowledged that their concerns were understandable, particularly because she was in her 20s when she began dating Kashyap. The filmmaker was considerably older and had already been married twice at the time.
Are Anurag Kashyap And Shubhra Shetty Getting Married?
According to Kashyap, Shubhra does not believe in marriage. However, the filmmaker made it clear that he is happy with their relationship and does not want to lose what they have built together.
When asked about their wedding plans, Kashyap said, “I’m very happy to be with her. I want to be with her. So, whatever that takes.” He went on to speak about his biggest personal concern as he gets older, saying, “What is an old man’s insecurity? I want to be healthy enough to outlive the people I love.”
Kashyap added that he is content with where their relationship stands today. In his words, “So, I think about it a lot. But my thing is, as long as we have found what we have found now, I’m happy with anything. I don’t want to lose this.”
Anurag Kashyap and Shubhra Shetty currently live in Bengaluru, after moving away from Mumbai. After nearly 11 years together, the couple continues to maintain a relatively private personal life, even as their recent candid conversation has offered fans a closer look at their relationship, their 20-year age gap and their views on marriage.
