Sophia Maddox has found herself in the spotlight with the release of her Hulu documentary, My Grandfather Charles Manson. The deeply personal film follows the 26-year-old actress and filmmaker as she uncovers a family secret that reshaped her understanding of her own identity after learning that infamous cult leader Charles Manson was her biological grandfather.

Rather than revisiting Manson’s crimes alone, the documentary explores the emotional fallout of discovering a connection to one of America’s most notorious criminals and how that revelation affected generations of Maddox’s family.

Who Is Sophia Maddox?

Sophia Maddox is a Los Angeles based actress and filmmaker whose latest project is rooted in her own family’s story. The documentary traces her journey after her father, Daniel Arguelles, confirmed through DNA testing that Charles Manson was his biological father. This revelation shocked Sophia as the convicted murderer turned out to be her grandfather.

According to the reports, Maddox learned the news shortly after returning home from a flight during which she contracted COVID-19. While speaking to her father over the phone, he told her he believed he had finally discovered the identity of the father he had spent his entire life searching for.

Recalling the conversation, Maddox said, “It just popped up. He said, ‘I think I found out who my dad is. And if it’s true, it’s really dark.'”

How Daniel Arguelles Discovered The Truth

For years, Arguelles had no idea who his biological father was. Raised by his mother and stepfather, he grew up without answers about his family history.

Arguelles reportedly uploaded his DNA to a genealogy website in 2015 in hopes of finding biological relatives. Years later, he matched with Michael Brunner, one of Charles Manson’s known sons, through Ancestry.com. Additional DNA testing in 2022 confirmed the biological connection.

Maddox later told The Guardian that her father struggled to share the news with her because of how disturbing the discovery was.

“When my dad found out, he couldn’t bring himself to tell me for two months because it was so dark,” she told the publication.

Sophia Maddox’s Childhood About Grandfather She Never Met

Long before the DNA results, Maddox had grown up hearing her father speak about the man he had never met. According to The Guardian, he would often tell her at bedtime how much he wished he knew his father, a longing that stayed with him throughout his life.

The filmmaker has said that, despite those conversations, she knew very little about Charles Manson growing up.

Her biggest reference point was Quentin Tarantino’s 2019 film Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood which reimagines the events surrounding the Manson Family’s infamous 1969 Tate LaBianca murders. It was only after her father’s DNA results that she began exploring the real history behind one of America’s most notorious criminal cases.

Why Sophia Maddox Made The Documentary?

Maddox’s attempt to understand her family’s past eventually evolved into a film about identity, inherited trauma and healing.

The documentary follows Maddox as she speaks with former members of the Manson Family cult, attends therapy sessions and confronts difficult questions.

The film opens with Maddox saying, “I come from a murderer. Who the fuck would accept me?” But as the documentary unfolds, it shifts its focus from Charles Manson himself to the emotional impact his legacy left on those who never even knew him.

Maddox told the publication that making the documentary came naturally because storytelling had always been a part of who she was.

“I grew up kind of lonely and when you grow up pretty isolated and lonely, you want to be heard and seen. I think it nurtures you to want to tell people and shout from the rooftops who you are and what your story is,” she said.

She added, “That’s just how I was built and raised, to be a storyteller, and maybe hopefully this allows someone else to feel a little less lonely.”

Who Was Charles Manson?

Charles Manson was the leader of the Manson Family cult whose followers carried out a string of brutal murders in California in August 1969. Among the victims was actor Sharon Tate, who was eight and a half months pregnant, along with Jay Sebring, Abigail Folger, Wojciech Frykowski and Steven Parent. The following night, supermarket executive Leno LaBianca and his wife, Rosemary LaBianca, were also killed.

The murders have since inspired numerous books, documentaries and films, including Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood. Manson was convicted of murder and conspiracy to commit murder alongside several of his followers and died in prison in 2017 at the age of 83.
