Born Halroy Candis Williams, Hal Williams was an American actor who built a successful career in television and film. He began acting professionally in the late 1960s and continued working for more than 50 years. Although he appeared in numerous shows and movies, Williams was best remembered for two roles that became television favourites — Officer “Smitty” Smith in Sanford and Son and Lester Jenkins in 227.
Hal Williams’ Television And Film Career
Williams enjoyed a remarkable television career, starring in numerous popular series across several decades. From 1985 to 1990, he played Lester Jenkins on the NBC sitcom 227, appearing alongside Marla Gibbs, Regina King, Jackée Harry and Helen Martin. He portrayed the husband of Mary Jenkins and father of Brenda Jenkins throughout the show’s five-season run.
His other notable television credits include Private Benjamin, The Sinbad Show, On the Rocks, The Waltons, Good Times, Night Court, Hill Street Blues, Magnum P.I., Moesha, Parks and Recreation and the recent Matlock reboot starring Kathy Bates, which marked one of his final screen appearances.
His film credits included appearances in Hardcore, The Rookie, Guess Who and Flight, where he played Denzel Washington’s father.
