Veteran Bollywood producer and former Central Board of Film Certification chairman Pahlaj Nihalani has died at the age of 76. According to reports, Nihalani had been battling liver-related health complications and was admitted to Nanavati Hospital in Mumbai, where he breathed his last on Thursday. Reports suggested he had been unwell for several months.

For decades, Pahlaj Nihalani remained a familiar and often controversial figure in Bollywood, first as a successful commercial film producer and later as the outspoken face of India’s censor board.

Who Was Pahlaj Nihalani?

Long before he became associated with censorship controversies, Pahlaj Nihalani was known in Bollywood as a producer with a sharp understanding of mass entertainment. Beginning his career during the 1980s, Nihalani produced a string of mainstream Hindi films that catered heavily to single-screen audiences and family viewers. Some of his best-known productions included Ilzaam, Shola Aur Shabnam, Aankhen, Andaz and Talaash.

He shared a particularly successful creative partnership with Govinda, backing several films that helped shape the actor’s rise as one of Bollywood’s biggest comedy and commercial stars during the late 1980s and 1990s. Films like Aankhen went on to become cult favourites and major box office successes, remembered even today for their slapstick humour and mass appeal. Over the years, Nihalani built a reputation as a filmmaker deeply connected to commercial Hindi cinema at a time when Bollywood was dominated by larger-than-life entertainers.

How Pahlaj Nihalani Became The Face Of Film Censorship Debates

While his production career made him popular within the industry, it was his appointment as chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification in 2015 that pushed him into national headlines. His tenure as CBFC chief quickly became one of the most debated periods in the board’s history. Nihalani openly advocated stricter censorship standards and frequently argued that Indian cinema should maintain “cultural responsibility.” His comments and certification decisions triggered repeated clashes with filmmakers, actors and free speech advocates.

Several films during his tenure faced controversial cuts, muted dialogues or delayed certifications, leading to widespread criticism from the film industry. He also made headlines for objecting to profanity, sexual content and politically sensitive material in mainstream films.

His public disagreements with filmmakers often turned into national debates around artistic freedom versus moral policing in cinema. Eventually, in 2017, Nihalani was removed from the position and replaced by lyricist and advertising veteran Prasoon Joshi.

A Career That Reflected Bollywood’s Changing Eras

What made Pahlaj Nihalani unique was how his career reflected two very different eras of Hindi cinema. On one hand, he represented the loud, unapologetically commercial Bollywood of the 1980s and 1990s, an era driven by action, comedy, melodrama and mass entertainers.

On the other hand, he became one of the strongest defenders of conservative censorship during a period when Indian cinema and streaming platforms were becoming increasingly bold and experimental. Even his critics acknowledged that Nihalani remained fiercely vocal about his beliefs and never attempted to soften his opinions for public approval. In recent years, he had stayed relatively away from mainstream headlines, although he occasionally spoke about Bollywood, censorship and changing audience tastes in interviews.

Bollywood Reacts To His Death

News of his passing triggered reactions across the industry, especially among those who had worked with him during Bollywood’s commercial cinema boom. Many remembered him as a producer who understood mainstream audiences instinctively and played an important role in shaping the careers of several actors during the 1990s. Others reflected on the controversies surrounding his CBFC tenure, which permanently made him one of the most discussed figures in India’s entertainment landscape.

Love him or disagree with him, Pahlaj Nihalani remained impossible to ignore. And with his passing, Bollywood closes the chapter on one of its most outspoken, influential and controversial personalities.
