Shia LaBeouf recently admitted to misdemeanor battery charges after a bar fight in New Orleans. He showed up in court, took responsibility, and got a deal that involves probation and rehab stuff.

This whole mess started back in February during Mardi Gras when some guys got into a scuffle at a bar. LaBeouf ended up getting arrested because of it. So, when he pled guilty, the judge slapped him with two years of probation. Plus, he’s gotta go through drinking rehab, sensitivity training, and anger management classes.

Sarah Chervinsky, the lawyer for LaBeouf, said he wants to focus on moving on with both his personal and professional life. She explained that based on what they found out, the fight was just a small bar tussle in the early hours of the morning—nothing major. Now, LaBeouf is looking ahead, hoping to spend more time with his family, dive into work, and start new creative projects.

What Happened at the New Orleans Bar?

According to media reports, on February 17 around 12:45 a.m., things went south for actor Shia LaBeouf at the R Bar in New Orleans’ Marigny area. Police say LaBeouf directed homophobic slurs at some guys, then got into a fight, punching two and head-butting a third. Bar staff asked him to leave due to his aggression towards other patrons, but he didn’t cooperate.

Officers arrested LaBeouf after the incident. They filed court papers stating the actor’s offensive behavior and assault. He spent some time in jail following a hospital discharge and was later released on bond.

Allegations of Homophobic Slurs

In this case, there were serious allegations that anti-gay slurs were used. Chervinsky argued that her client wasn’t motivated by prejudice though. She dismissed hints otherwise, even with claims and video showing LaBeouf directed those slurs at some men. According to reports, one alleged victim, Nathan Thomas Reed, identifies as queer. Another person involved, Jeffrey Damnit, is known for his drag performances.

Damnit, whose legal name is Klein, took cell phone video outside the bar. It showed LaBeouf using the homophobic term “faggot.” This clip ended up being one of the main pieces of evidence in the case along with other footage.

Victims Sought Stronger Charges

At first, Damnit hoped that prosecutors would go after enhanced penalties under Louisiana law, since it permits harsher sentencing if victims are targeted based on their sex, gender, or perceived identity. Yet, the prosecution ended up charging the involved party with misdemeanors. Formal charges were actually laid down on May 21 by New Orleans District Attorney Jason Williams’ office via a bill of information.

The lawyer team for LaBeouf pointed out that he came to court ready to take responsibility for his actions. LaBeouf, who bought a house in New Orleans back in December, faced the court proceedings head-on. Chervinsky added that he was going to court “to show accountability for his part in what transpired” and he followed through with that intention.

Victim’s Attorney Responds to Outcome

After the court’s decision, attorney Michael Kennedy, representing Jeffrey Klein, stated that the case shows fame doesn’t put anyone above the law. He said the result should remind everyone in New Orleans that they’re treated equally, no matter how famous they are. Plus, Kennedy hopes the programs the court ordered will really help Klein.

“Klein’s been given a chance to improve himself,” Kennedy pointed out. “We all hope he’ll take the substance abuse treatment, sensitivity training, and anger management classes seriously. Our wish is for him to benefit from these and use what he learns to become a better person.”

Now that the legal stuff is mostly sorted out, LaBeouf needs to focus on his probation and rehab. Reports say he’ll still be able to work and spend time with his family. His legal team thinks he can now move ahead with his career and new projects while following the court’s orders.
