Instead of the direct continuation, the creators are moving towards expansion through a spin off described as a clean slate with the upcoming project will feature new characters, a different timeline and a fresh setting. It will not revisit Eleven the upside down or familiar villains. The Duffers have emphasised that they want to avoid repeating old beats or leaning on nostalgia. A subtle moment in the Season 5 Finale reportedly hints at this new direction, rewarding attentive viewers without spelling things out.
