The actress, who plays MJ in the Spider-Man films opposite Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, has opened up about the couple’s painful separation and admitted that even she feels bad for the characters.

The upcoming film picks up after the dramatic ending of Spider-Man: No Way Home, where Peter asked Doctor Strange to cast a spell that would make the world forget he is Spider-Man. While the spell saved the day, it also erased Peter from the memories of the people he loves most, including MJ and his best friend Ned.
According to details revealed by Empire, MJ has moved on with her life. She is now involved with a new romantic interest, played by Ahsoka actor Eman Esfandi. That leaves Peter watching from the sidelines, unable to share the history they once had together.

Reacting to the storyline, Zendaya didn’t hide her feelings. “As someone who cares about the characters and cares about these films, it’s like, ‘Oh my God, it’s so heartbreaking.’ You just feel so bad because you want them to be happy, and you know ultimately they would be happier together,” she said.
Her comments are likely to resonate with fans who have spent years rooting for Peter and MJ. After all, the pair went from classmates to best friends to one of the MCU’s most beloved couples and no one would have imagined it all to be wiped out this instant.
But while Zendaya is heartbroken about the way Peter and MJ’s story is moving forward, she also revealed that the storyline has also given her a fresh way to approach the character.
“It’s easy in a way, because I don’t have to play that I know this person. I don’t have to play all the history that they have together because, seemingly, to her, they don’t,” she explained.
