The memoir honours the resilience of ordinary people who refuse to let violence define their future.

In a land that has witnessed decades of turmoil and uncertainty, stories of ordinary people often remain untold. It is these unheard voices that Kashmiri author Suhail Saeed Lone seeks to bring to the forefront through his forthcoming book, “Breaking the Silence: The Truth of Terror.”

The book is not a political commentary or a historical account of the Kashmir conflict. Instead, it is a deeply personal narrative that explores the human cost of terrorism, the suffering endured by families, and the resilience of a society striving for peace and stability.

At the heart of the book lies an incident that changed Lone’s life forever. In November 1994, his father was kidnapped allegedly by militants belonging to the banned outfit Hizbul Mujahideen, leaving the family shattered and uncertain about the future.

For a young Suhail, the episode marked the beginning of a childhood overshadowed by fear and anxiety. He did not understand politics or ideology, but he understood the pain that entered his home when his father was taken away.

The author recalls days filled with unanswered questions, sleepless nights, and the agony of waiting for any news. Every knock on the door brought hope, while every passing day deepened the family’s despair.

Through these personal experiences, Lone attempts to present what he calls the “real face of terror” a reality often hidden behind political narratives and media headlines. He argues that terrorism destroys far more than lives; it shatters families, disrupts childhoods, and leaves emotional wounds that remain for generations.

One of the most poignant sections of the book revolves around a moment when the family was allegedly asked to sacrifice its dignity in exchange for his father’s life. Reflecting on the experience, Lone says it forced him to question the misuse of religion and the justification of violence in its name.

“If this is what they call jihad, then we do not want it,” he remembers thinking as a child.

The question remained with him for years and eventually became one of the central themes of his book. Lone makes it clear that his work is not directed against any religion or community. Instead, it challenges the process of radicalization, the exploitation of vulnerable minds, and the misuse of faith to justify violence.

The book delves into several significant themes, including the psychological consequences of terrorism, the suffering of innocent families, the courage of those who protected lives during difficult times, and the transformation that Kashmir has witnessed over the years.

It also highlights the importance of education, awareness, and dialogue in countering extremism and preventing future generations from being drawn towards violence.

In recent public interactions, Lone has consistently maintained that terrorism has inflicted immense suffering upon Jammu and Kashmir and that peace remains the only path toward lasting prosperity. He believes that development, social stability, and educational opportunities are essential to securing a better future for the younger generation.

The author also pays tribute to the resilience of Kashmir’s people, who, despite decades of conflict and uncertainty, have continued to pursue education, livelihoods, and hope for a brighter tomorrow.

Breaking the Silence: The Truth of Terror arrives at a time when discussions on national security and counter-terrorism continue to dominate public discourse. While supporting firm action against terrorism, Lone emphasizes that innocent civilians must always remain protected and that peace should remain the ultimate objective.

Throughout the manuscript, he repeatedly returns to the stories of ordinary people: parents who lost children, children who lost parents, and families whose lives were permanently altered by violence.

“Some stories are painful to remember, but necessary to tell,” he writes.

Describing himself not as a historian or politician but as a witness to a difficult era, Lone hopes his testimony will give voice to countless families whose suffering has rarely been documented.

The book’s central message is simple yet powerful: truth must prevail over propaganda, and peace must prevail over violence.

“If even one person chooses peace over violence after reading this book, or if even one young mind begins to question hatred, then the book will have achieved its purpose,” the author states.

As Kashmir continues its journey toward peace and progress, Breaking the Silence: The Truth of Terror promises to be more than a memoir. It is an appeal for reflection, understanding, and humanity, a reminder that behind every conflict are ordinary people carrying extraordinary pain, yet refusing to let violence define their future.
