What do modern young women who are educated, independent, stylish and completely on trend, want most from their wardrobe? Easy, wearable outfits that multitask while making heads turn. This is what indie homegrown fashion label Femmella promises to its wearer. Take it from the brand’s founder, Kavya Arora: “At Femmella, we promise comfort that doesn’t compromise on polish.”

Since its inception in 2008, the Indian prêt label has made a name for itself as one that offers clothing which adapts to a woman’s busy lifestyle. Arora began the brand upon her return to India after a stint in the United States and noticed a void in the international fast-fashion brands category in India. Indians at the time preferred to spend their money on heavy, embellished occasion wear. Further, sizing rarely extended far beyond a narrow, predictable range.

“What was missing,” he says, “was something more ordinary. It was a lack of contemporary clothing built around how Indian women actually lived, moved, and dressed day to day, rather than around a single occasion or a single body type. That observation became the founding premise of Femmella, built on the conviction that style and comfort were never meant to be a trade-off.”

In 2012, he was joined in the venture by his sister Ketki Gupta, who brought in her personal vision and an understanding of how clothing affects the way a woman feels about herself. “We made a clear call to prioritise fabric, fit, and real bodies over everything else,” the founders share. “We also set a hard rule early on. If it doesn’t feel good, it doesn’t get made. That’s still non-negotiable.”

Speaking about body shaming, Gupta adds, “A woman’s body goes through so many changes over time, and yet there’s so much shame attached to something as simple as clothes not fitting,” she has said. “Why should the woman feel like she’s the problem, and not the garment?” This then become the mantra guiding the team at Femmella. “Every style is developed with a range of body types in mind from the very start, rather than designed for one size and adjusted later. It is standard practice internally to visualise a new piece on a medium or large frame, or on a fuller body, because that is who the collection is actually being built for. If something doesn’t work for that woman’s life and body, it doesn’t make it into the line at all.”

Arora highlights, “Very early on, I realised trends create pressure, not value, so we made the decision to build timeless collections, rather than focus on seasonality. Women build wardrobes around items they keep coming back to. Hence, our design language favours refined silhouettes, clean lines, and versatile colour palettes that don’t expire with the season.

That commitment to longevity shows up most clearly in the handful of pieces that have become signatures for the label.” This includes their denim slit skirt, bamboo Always-On top and pants, and denim co-ord sets.

A focus on the highest quality fabric also sets them apart. DenimCore is built across three weights – DenimLite, DenimStretch, and DenimClassic, which are built for the realities of Indian summers. They also have a LinenLite collection as well as Holiday specific lines which extend the idea of comfort dressing into resort and travel wear. CrispCotton Poplin and the Denim Core collection are particularly popular for offering effortless polish with everyday versatility, while the Summer Knits range reflects Femmella’s belief that lightweight comfort, breathability, and refined design can coexist seamlessly.

“Behind all of this sits a discipline that’s fairly rare in a growing fashion company. It’s a willingness to grow slowly rather than dilute what the label stands for,” say the founders. “That means saying no to many things, like trends, overproduction, and sometimes even to short-term revenue. In an industry where speed and volume are often treated as proxies for success, we exercise restraint.”

They end by saying, “Inclusivity, for Femmella, has never functioned as a campaign talking point so much as basic infrastructure. With sizing that runs from XS to 5XL and a price point that keeps the brand within reach, the company has built that range into how it operates rather than treating it as an add-on to existing collections. Available today through Nykaa, Myntra, and its own website, Femmella has scaled its reach without losing the specificity of its original premise, which is that real Indian women, in their real bodies and real lives, deserve clothing built to meet them where they are.”

Gupta describes it best. “Every woman in a Femmella outfit should feel unbothered, comfortable and confident. They should feel like they don’t need to adjust anything. Not their outfit, not themselves. Seventeen years on, that remains, more or less, the entire pitch.”
