AN ENCHANTING trip TO AN UNFORGETTABLE GREEN GETAWAY IN THE MALDIVES

Discover an idyllic haven in the Maldives, where nature and architecture blend seamlessly, offering a serene retreat for eco-conscious travellers.

Here, the line between architecture and landscape blurs, creating an ether where one can seamlessly coexist with the other. Embracing the Alila brand’s unwavering dedication to sustainability, this sanctuary sands as a symbol of responsible tourism. The importance placed on preserving the environment is palpable, as evident by the on-site bottling plant and the conscientious reduction of single-use plastics. The kitchens themselves adhere to a comprehensive composting and waste management program, underscoring the resort’s commitment to minimizing their ecological footprint. I have been planning my trip to Alila Kothaifaru for a long time as I have been hearing about visionary architect Chioh-Hui Goh drawing from the principles of harmony and minimalism, weaving together architectural wonders and the untouched natural landscape beautifully at Kothaifaru with a focus on sustainability. I have flown Vistara Via Mumbai to the Maldives on some previous occasions which is amazing, but imagine the convenience of flying directly to this paradise if you are a Dilliwaala like me. So, when Vistara recently launched its daily non-stop flights between Delhi and the enchanting Maldives, the husband books us on a vacation immediately.

DEEP CONNECT WITH THE ENVIRONMENT
My adventure begins with a thrilling 45-minute seaplane ride from the bustling capital of Malé, as I eagerly anticipate the paradise that awaits me. As the seaplane gradually descends, I marvel at the breath-taking beauty that unfolds beneath me. The Alila Kothaifaru resort emerges from the azure waters, embraced by the lush Raa Atoll, as if it has been delicately placed there by the hands of nature. My excitement peaks as I set foot on this enchanting oasis, ready to explore its wonders. The resort spans an impressive thirty acres, a sanctuary meticulously designed by the esteemed Singapore-based firm, Studiogoto. I am immediately struck by the seamless integration of the low-rise pavilions and villas, blending effortlessly with the surrounding lush greenery, creating a harmonious fusion of nature and luxury. The villas, comprising 44 beachfront and 36 overwater retreats, are thoughtfully positioned to offer stunning views of the coral reef and the tranquil turquoise waters. Strolling along the sandy shores, I revel in the serenity that envelops me. Each corner of Alila Kothaifaru seems to encourage a deeper appreciation for the delicate ecosystem it is nestled within. The sounds of the waves crashing gently against the shore and the rustle of the verdant forests provide a symphony that resonate deep within my soul. Whether I choose to slip away into the calm embrace of the beachfront villas or I am captivated by the awe-inspiring vistas from my overwater refuge, I am enveloped in a sense of harmony that only nature can provide. The meticulous attention to detail is evident in the seamless integration of sustainable features, ensuring a truly eco-friendly experience. Alila Kothaifaru is more than just a destination; it is an immersive experience that allows you to reconnect with nature and find inner peace.

SUSTAINABLE GASTRONOMY
My exploration continues as I venture into the culinary realm, where the hotel’s six restaurants and bars await. With their diverse menus and inviting ambiance, each offers a delectable culinary journey. Indulging in a feast of flavours, I savour every moment, confident in the knowledge that the hotel’s commitment to sustainability extends to its gastronomic offerings. Eager to indulge my taste buds in the flavours of the Maldives, I decide to try, ‘Taste of the Maldives’ at the all-day dining Sea Salt This delightful culinary creation features tuna prepared in three delicious ways, accompanied by perfectly roasted aubergine and freshly made chapatis. I find myself drawn to Umami, the fine dining restaurant that showcases modern Japanese-inspired cuisine. I opt for their signature miso-marinated black cod and I am wowed. At sunset I head to Mirus Bar, to take in stunning views savour the special martini infused with a kick of local chili. Meanwhile, another favourite is Yakitori, a cosy spot perfect for enjoying traditional Japanese fare and tantalizing beverages. The choice between sake and cocktails isn’t easy, but curiosity leads me to the intriguing Umami Balance cocktail. This unique blend of sake and peach schnapps is an absolute delight, perfectly complemented by small bites like the succulent wagyu beef skewers glazed with ginger and maple soy.

SOUNDS OF NATURE
Each staff member possesses an uncanny ability to anticipate my personal preferences, from ensuring my favoured table at the restaurant to catering to my preference for sparkling water. Within the sun-kissed embrace of this coastal haven, a plethora of engaging activities await me. I relish the thrill of water sports, from the exhilarating windsurfing to the peaceful serenity of kayaking on the azure waters. Furthermore, I embark on a mesmerizing sunset cruise aboard a traditional wooden Dhoni, indulging in the breath-taking beauty of the vibrant hues painting the horizon across the vast expanse of the sea. Yet, what truly takes my breath away is the awe-inspiring spa. Perched on stilts amidst the verdant canopies of trees, the treatment rooms seem to float ethereally above the ground. Here, I discover a haven of relaxation and rejuvenation, where the soothing sounds of nature accompany the expert touch of skilled therapists. As I stroll along the island’s captivating coastline, I cannot help but feel a sense of belonging. The long stretches of pristine white sand and the dense jungle vegetation envelop the island, imparting a feeling of tranquillity and rootedness. It is as if the island had found its place in the vastness of the atoll, creating a sanctuary for both the mind and soul. One of the most remarkable aspects of this exquisite location is its proximity to the Hanifaru Bay UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, a sanctuary known for its majestic manta rays. Alila Kothaifaru has enchanted me, teaching me the importance of preserving the delicate beauty of our natural world. I leave with a renewed commitment to cherishing and protecting the remarkable wonders that Mother Nature so generously offers us. Vistara’s non-stop flights from Delhi to the Maldives make it even more convenient to visit. I will be back soon!
