Legendary French Crystalware Brand Baccarat Arrives in India

Certain global brands with a long legacy of excellence have become almost synonymous with the products they offer. French crystal house Baccarat, which first opened its doors over 260 years ago, is one such. Discerning Indians can now rejoice because this celebrated Maison of crystal is now opening its flagship boutique in the heart of India’s capital – at The Chanakya, New Delhi.

Laurence Nicolas, the CEO of Baccarat refers to this as a historic moment, which continues a legacy dating back to 1886 when Indian royalty was first captivated with Baccarat’s exquisite crystal pieces. He names the Maharajas of Kapurthala, Bikaner, Indore and Baroda as avid customers who adorned their palaces with dazzling creations from the brand. In turn, some of Baccarat’s most celebrated designs were also inspired by India’s rich artistic heritage. These include the Elephant Liquor Cabinet and the Ferrières collection, both of which were presented at the 1878 Paris World Fair.

The brand originated in 1764 and has since become known for crafting masterpieces in crystal. Over the years, the Maison has stayed true to its commitment to beauty, contemporary refinement and the crafting of unique experiences. Having garnered a reputation for being alchemist of joy and creator of enchanting worlds, Baccarat is said to be the fruit of a group of daring artisans who worked to transform the elements of nature – earth, air, fire and water – into pure crystal.

Its masterpieces have surprised the world and helped the brand to gain recognition and numerous awards at World Fairs and international exhibitions. Now spread across the globe in places like Paris, Moscow, New York, Tokyo, Miami and Hong Kong, Baccarat’s influence is felt across its many houses, boutiques, restaurants, bars and hotels. In 2024, Baccarat celebrated its milestone 260th anniversary and committed to continuing its international development, while staying firmly anchored in its roots. India was therefore the logical next destination.

Baccarat first opened its retail branch in Bombay in 1886 to cater to its princely clients. Now, the bond is set to continue with the flagship store’s opening marking the beginning of an exciting new era.

“Following Baccarat’s 260th anniversary, this new chapter in India marks a significant milestone in our journey. Expanding our presence in the region allows us to connect more closely with our Indian clientele. The flagship will be an immersion into Baccarat’s art de vivre, delivering a harmonious and memorable experience for our guests,” says Nicolas.

“With over 260 years of heritage, Baccarat represents the pinnacle of French craftsmanship and luxury. The opening of our new boutique at The Chanakya marks an exciting chapter — an immersive destination where tradition meets innovation, and each creation is designed to illuminate life’s most exceptional moments. We are proud to bring the spirit of Baccarat to the heart of Delhi,” adds Alexandrine Reille-Linyer, Baccarat Export Director.

Connoisseurs of luxury can now partake of Baccarat’s offerings in a contemporary setting, and browse through their chandeliers, barware and home décor. The piece de resistance at the grand opening on April 19 was the majestic 84-light Zénith chandelier, which symbolises the Maison’s journey in India. This chandelier in clear and red crystal is a showstopper piece that merges tradition and modernity while evoking grandeur with its rich composition and numerous facets which reflect radiant light and the creative skill of generations of masterful artisans.

“I’m delighted to collaborate with Baccarat as it deepens its roots in India. Embodying a legacy of exquisite craftsmanship, Baccarat aligns with India’s love of artistry, art of celebration and joy of living,” says Mandeep Singh, Director, Lux Abode, Baccarat’s partner in India.

The boutique at The Chanakya will offer patrons an immersive look into Baccarat’s universe. They can witness up close dazzling chandeliers, magnificent home décor and unique barware collections. Nicolas highlights that each creation of Baccarat reflects a delicate balance between ancestral know-how and cutting-edge innovation. The pursuit of excellence is evident in the remarkable distinctions that the Maison has garnered including 12 Best French Workmen, which is the highest number in France, and two Knights of the Order of Arts and Letters.

“For over two centuries, Baccarat has captivated the world’s most illustrious figures, winning the hearts of artists, icons, and lovers of life across generations—from Josephine Baker and the Princess of Monaco to Karl Lagerfeld and Kris Jenner. Among the pieces on display is the legendary Harcourt glass, commissioned by none other than Emperor Napoleon III and most recently spotlighted in the Netflix series, ‘Emily in Paris’,” shares Nicolas.

Baccarat’s collaborations with globally renowned artists and designers over the years, also find pride of place in the store, showcasing pieces such as Philippe Starck’s ‘Talleyrand’ pieces, Virgil Abloh’s ‘Crystal Clear’ collection, Arik Levy’s ‘Tuile de Cristal’, as well as striking creations from Baccarat’s 260th anniversary collection called ‘New Antique’ which was made by Marcel Wanders.

Singh says, “The Baccarat boutique unveils 80m² of refined design where French elegance is expressed through delicate mouldings and a black-and-white checkerboard floor. Octagonal niches, paying tribute to the iconic pendant of Baccarat chandeliers, punctuate the space. An intense and vibrant red dominates the boutique. The shade is the Maison signature obtained from the fusion of clear crystal and 24-carat gold at precisely 540 degrees celsius. Light becomes a key player in this scenography, amplified by the interplay of reflections between chandeliers, mirrors and lacquered panels. The result is an immersive, luminous experience that magnifies the radiance of Baccarat crystal, blurring the line between tradition and modernity. This flagship marks a milestone for Baccarat in India, setting the stage for an exciting future. With a second boutique opening on the horizon, the Maison continues its journey in the country, elevating every moment with its timeless artistry and contemporary vision.”
