8th Pay Commission Latest News: Central Government Employees Seek Salary Boost, DA Hike and Pension Reforms; Check Railway Engineers Pay Structure Revision Demands

8th Pay Commission: Railway engineers have raised several long-pending concerns before the 8th Pay Commission, demanding improvements in pay structure, career growth, promotion opportunities and job satisfaction. During the recently held stakeholder consultation meeting in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, railway engineers urged the commission to address issues related to pay disparity and professional stagnation.

The demands were submitted by the All India Railway Engineers Federation (AIREF) and the East Coast Railway Engineers Association (ECoREA) before 8th Pay Commission Member Secretary Pankaj Jain, according to the reports.

8th Pay Commission: Railway Engineers Seek Revision in Pay Structure

AIREF Secretary General BP Dash said that the existing salary structure for railway engineers has failed to meet their financial needs amid rising economic pressures. He claimed that the situation has worsened gradually since the implementation of the 6th Pay Commission.

According to Dash, railway engineers handle crucial technical and safety-related responsibilities, yet many non-technical and non-safety categories currently receive higher pay scales. The federation has demanded a correction in this imbalance and urged the 8th Pay Commission to restore the pay hierarchy that was followed until the 5th Pay Commission. He also requested that railway engineers should be granted Group B status, similar to officers working in other Central Government departments.

8th Pay Commission: AIREF Demands Increase in Group B Posts

Another major issue highlighted by AIREF was the limited number of Group B positions in Indian Railways. The federation pointed out that only around 0.29% of railway posts fall under Group B, which significantly restricts career advancement and promotion opportunities.

The organisation has demanded that the share of Group B posts be increased to the national average of 7.5%. It argued that increasing these positions would provide better professional growth opportunities and improve motivation among railway engineers.

AIREF Organising Secretary General Sivakant Singh also highlighted concerns regarding career stagnation, declining motivation and limited opportunities for advancement among railway engineers.

8th Pay Commission Holds Nationwide Consultations

The Bhubaneswar meeting was conducted on July 6 and 7 as part of the 8th Pay Commission’s nationwide consultation process with employee unions, pensioners and other stakeholders. These discussions are aimed at gathering feedback before the commission prepares its final recommendations.

The commission is scheduled to conclude its consultations in Kolkata on July 10. Earlier meetings were held in several cities, including Delhi, Lucknow, Hyderabad, Srinagar, Ladakh and Bhubaneswar. Apart from railway-related demands, various employee organisations have been raising issues such as a higher fitment factor, improved allowances, pension-related reforms, revision of House Rent Allowance (HRA) and changes in the Modified Assured Career Progression (MACP) scheme.

8th Pay Commission: Key Demands Raised by Central Government Employees

Although these stakeholder meetings will not immediately change salaries or allowances, they allow employee groups to submit their concerns, provide supporting data and explain practical challenges faced by workers. The 8th Pay Commission, which was constituted on November 3, 2025, has been assigned the task of reviewing the pay structure, pensions and allowances of Central Government employees while considering the government’s financial limitations.
