th Pay Commission Latest News: The 8th Central Pay Commission, established on November 3, 2025, has now served 10 out of its 18 months’ period. The Commission, chaired by Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, is reviewing questions related to salaries, allowances and pensions for central government employees and pensioners. The submission of the report is expected in May 2027; however, there has been no announcement of the date for submission of the report from the government’s side. The panel is now consulting employee associations, pensioner associations and others. According to the official notice issued by the Commission, the consultations will be held in Chennai between September 7-8, 2026, in Puducherry on September 9, 2026, in Chandigarh between September 16-18, 2026 and in Bengaluru between October 7-8, 2026.
8th Pay Commission Latest News: Pre-2026 Pension Revision Becomes Major Demand
One of the most significant recent developments includes the call for including employees of the central government who retired before January 1, 2026, in the pension revision being planned. The Department of Personnel and Training has submitted representations by the pensioners’ and workers’ associations requesting the amendment of the Terms of Reference of the Commission. But it should be noted that the pension revision of pre-2026 retirees has not been approved. It has to be considered by the Department of Expenditure.
8th Pay Commission Latest News: Civilian OROP Demand Explained
Organisations representing employees and pensioners are also demanding One Rank One Pension (OROP) for civilians. The objective behind this proposal is to bridge disparities among the pensions of the employees who have retired from comparable ranks/levels and have the same qualifying service period but at different time periods. This demand is associated with the issue of pension parity and notional fixation wherein the previous retirees may be put on par with the same level of the new pay structure. But civilian OROP is not a sanctioned 8th CPC benefit presently.
8th Pay Commission Latest News: 3.833 Fitment Factor Is Not Final
The fitment factor continues to remain one of the major areas of interest. The NC-JCM Staff Side has recommended a fitment factor of 3.833 along with a minimum basic pay of ₹69,000. Other organisations have put forward other factors like 3.61 and 4.00, thus indicating that there is no common number yet. It may be compared to the 7th Pay Commission which has recommended a fitment factor of 2.57 and increased the minimum basic pay from ₹7,000 to ₹18,000. Any figure calculated through 3.833 will remain only a hypothesis until it is finalised by the 8th CPC and Government.
8th Pay Commission Latest News: Other Pension Demands
Pensioner associations are also demanding an increased minimum pension, commutation period for pension reduction and gratuity. The NC-JCM has demanded that the minimum pension be fixed at ₹45,000, commutation restoration period should be reduced from 15 years to 11 years, and maximum gratuity should be increased from ₹25 lakh to ₹75 lakh. All these are demands and are yet to be accepted.
