8th Pay Commission Latest News:Â The 8th Central Pay Commission (8th CPC) has completed its stakeholder consultation meeting in Kolkata on July 10, 2026, where representatives from central government organisations, employee associations and unions shared their demands, concerns and suggestions regarding salary revisions, allowances and pension benefits.
The Kolkata visit was part of the Commission’s nationwide consultation process to collect feedback before preparing its recommendations for the Centre. The panel is conducting discussions with employee groups, pensioners’ organisations and other stakeholders across different regions to understand their expectations on pay structure, allowances and retirement benefits.
The fitment factor has emerged as one of the most closely watched issues in the 8th Pay Commission discussions, as it will play a major role in deciding the revised basic pay of central government employees and pensioners.
8th Pay Commission: Why Fitman Factors Matter for Salary Revision
The fitment factor is a multiplication rate applied to the existing basic pay to calculate the revised salary under a new Pay Commission. It directly impacts the basic pay and influences several other components, including allowances and pension calculations.
A higher fitment factor could lead to a larger increase in basic salary, while a lower multiplier would result in a comparatively smaller revision. However, the government has not yet finalised or officially announced the fitment factor for the 8th Pay Commission. The final decision will be taken only after the Commission completes its assessment and submits its recommendations.
Under the 7th Pay Commission, the fitment factor was fixed at 2.57, which was used to revise the salaries of central government employees. The expectation around the new multiplier has become a major point of discussion among employees and unions.Â
8th Pay Commission: Fitment Factor May Impact on DA, HRA and Other Allowances
The importance of the fitment factor goes beyond basic salary revision. Several components of a government employee’s pay structure, including Dearness Allowance (DA), House Rent Allowance (HRA), Transport Allowance (TA) and other benefits, are calculated based on basic pay.
Therefore, any increase in the basic salary due to a higher fitment factor could also raise the overall salary package. For pensioners, the fitment factor will also be significant as the 8th Pay Commission’s recommendations are expected to influence pension revisions. A favourable revision could improve retirement benefits for former government employees.
What is next For 8th Pay Commission?
The Commission will continue consultations with stakeholders before preparing its final report. Employee unions and associations have been raising demands related to minimum pay, pension reforms, allowances and changes in the pay matrix during these meetings.
As discussions progress, central government employees and pensioners are closely monitoring the Commission’s recommendations, with the final decision on the fitment factor expected to determine the scale of salary and pension revisions under the 8th Pay Commission.
