The Department of Posts under the Ministry of Communications has clarified the reimbursement rules through detailed FAQs, making the process simple and transparent. Employees will now find it easier to claim this benefit without confusion.
8th Pay Commission: Children Education Allowance 2026 Amount and Monthly Benefits
Under the new rules, government employees will receive a fixed Children Education Allowance of ₹2,812.5 per month. If a child is staying in a hostel for studies, a hostel subsidy of ₹8,437.5 per month will also be provided.
The amount is fixed and will be given regardless of the actual expenses. In addition, whenever Dearness Allowance increases by 50 percent, the Children Education Allowance will automatically rise by 25 percent.

The government has made it clear that this allowance is available only for up to two eldest children. If both husband and wife are government employees, only one of them can claim the benefit. The child must be studying in a recognized institution. Also, the reimbursement can be claimed only once in a year after the financial year ends.

With the implementation of the National Education Policy 2020, the government has allowed a one time relaxation if a child has to repeat a class. Another major change is that the allowance now includes pre primary education such as nursery, LKG, and UKG. To claim the allowance, employees need to submit a certificate from the Head of Institution confirming that the child studied there in the previous academic year. For hostel subsidy claims, the certificate must also include details of lodging and food expenses.

The government has clarified that employees will continue to receive this allowance even if they are on leave or under suspension. In case of retirement, dismissal, or removal from service, the allowance will be paid until the end of that academic year in which the employee leaves service. If an employee is reinstated through a court order, the decision regarding the allowance will be taken by the competent authority.
