8th Pay Commission: The process related to the 8th Pay Commission has picked up pace, offering some reassurance to central government employees and pensioners. The government has now provided the Commission with a dedicated office at Chandralok Bhawan on Janpath in New Delhi, allowing it to officially start functioning. At the same time, steps to appoint officers and staff on deputation have been sped up, and the required instructions have already been issued.

According to official sources, the 8th Pay Commission was formally set up through a government resolution dated November 3, 2025. As per existing rules, the Commission is required to submit its recommendations within 18 months from the date of notification.

8th Pay Commission: Timeline for Recommendations

Based on this timeline, the Commission is expected to submit its report sometime between early and mid-2027. Nearly three months have already passed since its formation, leaving roughly 15 months for the Commission to complete its task. However, the government has the authority to extend this deadline if needed.

8th Pay Commission: No Immediate Relief for Employees

Even though the Commission has begun work, central government employees have not received any immediate financial relief. Employee unions were expecting some form of interim relief or at least a reference to the 8th Pay Commission in the Union Budget 2026. The lack of any announcement has caused disappointment among staff and pensioners.

In response, the Central Government Employees and Workers (CCGEW) has announced a one-day nationwide strike scheduled for February 12, 2026. The demands include interim relief, the merger of Dearness Allowance with basic pay, and a reconsideration of the Terms of Reference of the 8th Pay Commission.

8th Pay Commission: Key Meeting on February 25

Focus has now shifted to February 25, when an important meeting of the National Council of JCM (Staff Side) is set to take place. During this meeting, employee representatives will prepare a detailed memorandum to be submitted to the 8th Pay Commission. The document is expected to outline demands related to revised pay scales, allowances, and pension-related benefits.

This meeting will serve as the first major opportunity for staff representatives to formally communicate their expectations and concerns to the Commission.

8th Pay Commission: What Lies Ahead for Employees and Pensioners

For the time being, employees and pensioners will have to wait. Any actual changes in pay or pension benefits are unlikely before the Commission submits its recommendations in 2027. After that, the government will review the report and take a final decision on implementation.
