Following allegations against TCS firm in Nashik over alleged pressure on employees to convert to Islam, a fresh controversy has emerged involving an IT company in Pune. A former employee of Wipro Technologies has accused the company of religious harassment, workplace discrimination, and circumstances that allegedly led to her resignation. The matter has resulted in a complaint being lodged with the Hinjawadi Police and a legal notice being sent to the company.
The allegations came to light during a press conference organized by the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti in Pune. The former employee alleged that during her tenure at Wipro’s Hinjawadi office, a colleague repeatedly pressured her to embrace Islam and pursue a relationship with a Muslim man.
Details about the Allegation
According to the complainant, the colleague allegedly became involved in her personal affairs and repeatedly encouraged her to renounce Hinduism, suggesting that conversion would lead to a more comfortable life and better prospects overseas. The former employee stated that she firmly rejected these advances and subsequently limited all interactions with the colleague to strictly professional matters.
She further claimed that she raised the issue with senior management through official channels, but no disciplinary action was taken against the colleague. Instead, she alleged that her complaints were overlooked and that she later found herself facing a complaint before the company’s internal Ombuds Committee.
Similarities of Both Cases
1. Allegations of Religious Conversion Pressure
In both cases, employees allegedly claimed they were pressured to convert to Islam while working in a professional environment. The allegations suggest that religion became a point of discussion within the workplace, extending beyond purely professional interactions.
2. Workplace Harassment Claims
Both complaints involve accusations that the alleged conversion attempts created a hostile or uncomfortable work environment. The employees contend that the pressure affected their mental well-being and workplace experience.
3. Complaints Escalated to Authorities
In both incidents, the matter was not confined to internal company mechanisms and was taken to external authorities, including police and legal channels. This indicates that the complainants believed internal grievance procedures were insufficient or ineffective.
4. Allegations of Inaction by Management
A common thread in both cases is the claim that company management either failed to act adequately or did not address concerns to the complainants’ satisfaction. The Pune complainant specifically alleges that no action was taken against the colleague despite formal complaints.
As of now, Wipro has not made any official statement regarding the allegation. The claims made by the affected have not been verified independently, and the matter remains subject to police investigation.
