Omar Abdullah on Monday called for the introduction of artificial snow systems in Gulmarg, warning that climate variability is increasingly threatening winter sports and tourism in the region.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Khelo India Winter Games, the Chief Minister welcomed athletes from across the country and emphasized the need to adapt infrastructure to changing weather patterns. He noted that snowfall in recent years has become inconsistent, making long-term planning for winter sporting events more challenging.

Abdullah said the government aims to position Gulmarg as a globally competitive skiing destination, but stressed that reliance on natural snowfall alone is no longer viable. He proposed artificial snow generation as a practical solution to maintain sporting schedules, attract tourists, and protect the local economy.

Acknowledging environmental and logistical concerns surrounding artificial snow projects, he maintained that proactive measures are essential to sustain winter tourism. “Thousands of livelihoods—from hoteliers and guides to transport operators and small businesses—depend on a stable winter season,” he said.

The Chief Minister reaffirmed support for sports infrastructure and athlete development across Jammu and Kashmir, expressing confidence that consistent investment will produce more international-level competitors.

He also congratulated skier Arif Khan for his achievements, saying his success should inspire emerging talent. Abdullah added that while winning medals is important, broader participation in sports remains key to building a strong winter sports culture in the region.

He concluded that sustainable tourism planning, combined with modern snow management systems, can help Gulmarg emerge as a leading international ski destination while ensuring economic stability for local communities.
