Assam Assembly Election 2026: Voting for the Assam Assembly Elections 2026 began on Thursday, with polling underway across all 126 constituencies. With over 2.5 crore voters set to decide the fate of 722 candidates, the election is a high-stakes battle between the ruling BJP and the opposition led by Congress.

Polling Timings & Voter Turnout

Polling started at 7 AM and will continue till 5 PM. Long queues were seen outside polling booths early in the morning, reflecting strong voter enthusiasm. Around 2.50 crore voters, including women and third-gender voters, are eligible to vote at 31,490 polling stations.

Are Banks Open or Closed Today?

Closed: Most bank branches across Assam are closed today to allow employees to participate in voting. While there is no nationwide RBI holiday, local closures are in effect.

Are Schools & Colleges Open or Closed Today?

Closed: All schools and colleges, both government and private, remain closed today due to polling across the state.

Are Government Offices Open or Closed Today?

Closed: Government offices in Assam are shut as part of election day arrangements.

  • Public Transport: Buses, trains, and autos are running normally.
  • Emergency Services: Hospitals, ambulances, and pharmacies are open.
  • Shops & Markets: Shops and malls are functioning as usual.
  • Stock Markets: Bombay Stock Exchange and National Stock Exchange remain open.

Assam Assembly Election Today: What’s Closed?

As polling takes place across Assam, several services remain closed to ensure smooth and fair elections:

  • Banks: Most bank branches are closed today to allow staff to participate in voting.
  • Schools & Colleges: All educational institutions, including government and private schools and colleges, are shut.
  • Government Offices: Offices remain closed due to polling arrangements and public holiday.
  • Liquor Shops & Bars (Dry Day): Sale of alcohol is prohibited today, and liquor shops, bars, and pubs remain closed as per election guidelines.

These measures are implemented to facilitate maximum voter turnout and maintain law and order during the elections.

Key Candidates in the Fray

Prominent leaders contesting include Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Gaurav Gogoi, Badruddin Ajmal, Akhil Gogoi, and Lurinjyoti Gogoi.

Party-Wise Contest & Alliances

The Congress is contesting 99 seats, followed by the BJP (90). Other parties include AIUDF, AGP, BPF, AAP, TMC, and several regional outfits. NDA includes BJP, AGP, and BPF, while the opposition alliance includes Congress and its partners.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged citizens, especially youth and women, to vote in large numbers and strengthen democracy.

Votes will be counted on May 4, 2026, when the results will determine the next government in Assam.
