Assam CM Oath Ceremony 2026: The BJP legislature party in Assam is scheduled to meet on May 10 to officially choose its leader and finalise the new state cabinet ahead of the swearing-in ceremony on May 12 in Guwahati. Senior BJP leaders and central observers are expected to attend the crucial meeting as the party prepares to form the government for a third straight term in the state.

Incumbent Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is widely expected to be elected as the leader of the BJP legislature party and return as Chief Minister for a second consecutive term following the NDA’s massive victory in the Assam Assembly Elections 2026.

BJP-Led NDA Registers Massive Victory in Assam Elections 2026

The BJP delivered its strongest electoral performance in Assam so far by winning 82 seats on its own in the 126-member Assembly. This marked a major increase from the 60 seats the party secured in the 2021 elections.

The BJP’s alliance partners, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), also performed strongly by winning 10 seats each. Together, the BJP-led NDA alliance secured a commanding total of 102 seats in the Assembly, comfortably crossing the majority mark.

Meanwhile, the Indian National Congress, despite leading a wider opposition alliance, managed to win only 19 seats. The election result marked the BJP’s third consecutive victory in Assam and further strengthened its political dominance in the northeastern state.

Himanta Biswa Sarma Emerges as BJP’s Strongest Face in Assam

Himanta Biswa Sarma, who became Chief Minister in May 2021 after the BJP retained power in Assam, has emerged as the party’s most influential leader in the state over the past five years.

Under his leadership, the BJP significantly expanded its organisational presence across Upper Assam, Barak Valley and the Bodoland region. The party also focused heavily on welfare schemes, road connectivity, infrastructure projects, and development-focused campaigns, which helped strengthen its support base among different communities.

Political observers believe Sarma’s aggressive campaigning style and strong administrative image played a major role in the NDA’s landslide victory in the 2026 Assembly elections.

BJP Legislature Party Meeting to Finalise New Assam Cabinet

The BJP legislature party meeting will reportedly take place in the presence of senior BJP leaders JP Nadda and Nayab Singh Saini, who have been appointed as central observers for the process.

After the legislature party formally elects its leader, NDA MLAs are expected to meet the Governor and stake claim to form the next government in Assam. At the same time, discussions are underway regarding the composition of the new cabinet. Reports suggest that alliance partners AGP and BPF are likely to receive representation in the ministry.

The BJP is also expected to maintain a balance of regional, ethnic and alliance representation while selecting ministers for the new government.

Assam CM Swearing-In Ceremony Scheduled for May 12 in Guwahati

The oath-taking ceremony of the new Assam government will take place in Guwahati on May 12 and is expected to witness the presence of several senior BJP leaders, chief ministers from NDA-ruled states, party workers and supporters from across Assam.

Along with Himanta Biswa Sarma taking oath as Chief Minister for a second term, a new council of ministers is also likely to be sworn in during the ceremony. The event is expected to be one of the biggest political gatherings in the state following the BJP-led NDA’s decisive election victory.
