Who Will Be the New CM of Assam?

Himanta Biswa Sarma is widely expected to continue as the Chief Minister of Assam after the BJP-led NDA secured a massive victory in the 2026 Assembly elections. Multiple reports suggest the BJP leadership is set to back Sarma for another term following the alliance’s dominant performance.

The NDA won 102 seats in the 126-member Assam Assembly, with the BJP alone crossing the majority mark by winning 82 seats. The strong mandate has further strengthened Sarma’s position within the party and the Northeast political landscape.

Although there was some speculation about possible leadership changes after the elections, senior BJP leaders have indicated that Himanta Biswa Sarma is likely to take oath again on May 12 in Guwahati.

BJP Secures Third Consecutive Victory in Assam

The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance registered another dominant performance in the Assam Assembly elections. The BJP alone crossed the majority mark by winning 82 out of 126 assembly seats.

Its allies, Asom Gana Parishad and Bodoland Peoples Front, secured 10 seats each, taking the NDA tally to 102 seats overall.

Meanwhile, the Indian National Congress won 19 seats while its ally, Raijor Dal, secured two seats. The All India United Democratic Front and All India Trinamool Congress won two and one seats respectively.

Massive Preparations Underway in Guwahati

BJP leaders said preparations for the swearing-in ceremony are being carried out on a large scale. Security arrangements, crowd management, and stage preparations have already started in Guwahati ahead of the high-profile event.

“Following our historic win, BJP workers and members of the public are very excited to be part of this event, for which we are carrying out preparations in all earnest,” said Saikia.

Officials also confirmed that Prime Minister Modi will arrive at Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport before heading directly to the venue in Khanapara.

What the BJP Said About the New Government’s Agenda?

The BJP leadership said the new government will continue focusing on infrastructure, development, and welfare projects started during the previous terms.

“Our new government will carry forward the development work undertaken by the two previous governments and will fulfil all the promises made to the people this time,” said Saikia.

Party leaders believe the fresh mandate reflects strong public support for the BJP’s governance model in Assam.
