Assam Election Result LIVE Update: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has once again established its dominance in Assam politics after securing a decisive victory in the latest Assembly elections. With 82 seats in the 126-member Assembly, the party has comfortably crossed the majority mark and is set to form the government for a third consecutive term.

Now, the biggest question remains—who will be the next Chief Minister of Assam?

Even though the BJP has delivered a strong electoral performance, the leadership decision is still awaited. The party is expected to finalise its chief ministerial candidate during a meeting of its legislative party, which will take place in the presence of central observers.

Assam Election Result LIVE Update: BJP’s Big Win Sets Stage for Leadership Decision

The BJP’s victory reflects strong voter support for its governance and campaign strategy. The party, along with its allies, managed to retain power with a comfortable margin, strengthening its position in the Northeast.

Outgoing Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has already submitted his resignation to Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, following standard protocol to pave the way for the formation of a new government. The swearing-in ceremony is likely to take place after May 11, with May 12 being a probable date.

Speaking about the ceremony, Sarma said, “Since this was a historic win for the BJP and our allies, we want Prime Minister Narendra Modiji to attend the oath-taking ceremony of the new government. But we have been informed that the PM will be occupied till May 11; therefore, the event will take place only after that date.”

This statement indicates that the BJP is planning a high-profile oath-taking event.

Assam Election Result LIVE Update: Who Are the Top Contenders for Assam CM?

Himanta Biswa Sarma – The Frontrunner

Himanta Biswa Sarma remains the strongest candidate for the chief minister’s post. He led the BJP’s campaign across Assam and played a key role in the party’s victory. His governance, development policies, and welfare schemes have helped him gain public support.

Sarma also secured a massive personal win from the Jalukbari constituency, with a margin of over 89,000 votes, further strengthening his position as the top contender.

Ajanta Neog – Senior Leader in Consideration

Ajanta Neog, a six-time MLA from Golaghat, is another prominent name being discussed. She currently handles key portfolios such as finance and women & child development.

Her administrative experience and strong electoral performance—winning by over 43,000 votes—make her a serious contender if the BJP decides to explore alternative leadership options.

Ranjeet Kumar Dass – Experienced Party Figure

Ranjeet Kumar Dass, a senior BJP leader and former Assembly Speaker, is also in the race. He won the Bhowanipur-Sorbhog seat by more than 39,000 votes.

His long-standing association with the party and legislative experience could work in his favour if the leadership opts for a change.

Biswajit Daimary – Possible Deputy CM Pick

Biswajit Daimary, the current Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly, is another influential leader. He won the Tamulpur seat with a margin of over 29,000 votes.

While he may not be the top choice for chief minister, he is seen as a strong candidate for the deputy CM role in the new government.

Who Will Become Assam CM in 2026? Final Decision Awaited

Although Himanta Biswa Sarma is widely seen as the frontrunner, the BJP is known for making unexpected leadership choices. This has added an element of suspense to the final decision.

The party’s legislative meeting in the coming days will be crucial in determining who will take charge as Assam’s next Chief Minister.
