The flood situation in Assam showed signs of improvement on Wednesday, but the death toll rose to 103 after two more people drowned in Sivasagar and Karbi Anglong districts. More than 86,800 people remained affected across four districts, according to the latest Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) bulletin.
How Many People Are Affected By Assam Floods?
The ASDMA said 86,800-plus people remained affected by the floods on Wednesday, down from nearly 1.13 lakh a day earlier. Golaghat remained the worst-affected district, with more than 42,000 people affected, followed by Nagaon with around 20,000 and Sivasagar with nearly 15,000.
How Many Relief Camps Are Operating In Assam?
Authorities are currently running 79 relief camps and relief distribution centres across five districts, providing assistance to 13,011 people. During the last 24 hours, officials distributed 96.55 quintals of rice, 18.26 quintals of dal, 5.41 quintals of salt and 204.81 litres of mustard oil to affected communities.
How Many Villages Remain Inundated?
According to the ASDMA, 433 villages remain under water, while 10,884.27 hectares of crop area have been damaged. Floodwaters have also damaged embankments, roads, bridges and other infrastructure. The Dhansiri River at Numaligarh continued to flow above the danger level. The floods have also affected livestock, with 32,944 domestic animals and poultry impacted across the state.
What Has Congress Demanded Over Assam Floods?
The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to declare the state’s recurring floods and river erosion a “national problem”. An APCC delegation led by Pranjit Das, chairman of its Relief & Rehabilitation Department, met Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya and submitted a memorandum addressed to the Prime Minister.
The Congress said around 40% of Assam’s geographical area, covering approximately 31.05 lakh hectares, is flood-prone, compared with the national average of 10.2%. The party said recurring floods and river erosion have severely affected farmers, daily wage workers and tea garden workers, while displacing families across the state. Despite the gradual improvement in flood conditions, Assam continues to face significant losses to lives, crops and infrastructure, with authorities maintaining relief and monitoring operations in the affected districts.
