The Assam government has begun distributing the first instalment of interim financial assistance to families affected by the recent floods. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma released the first tranche from Dibrugarh as the state continues relief and rehabilitation efforts in the worst hit districts.
The first phase of assistance is being provided to families whose homes were severely damaged by the floods. Eligible households in Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat districts will receive around Rs 75,000 as interim relief, including an initial payment of Rs 15,000 under one component of the relief package.
What Is The Current Flood Situation In Assam?
Although the flood situation has improved compared to previous days, over 1.36 lakh people are still affected across five districts. Floodwaters continue to impact Charaideo, Dhemaji, Golaghat, Jorhat and Sivasagar. Among them, Sivasagar remains the worst-affected district with more than 55,000 affected people, followed by Charaideo with around 40,000 and Jorhat with over 22,000 residents.
The flood death toll has increased to 85 after three more people lost their lives in Sivasagar on Sunday. Authorities continue to monitor the situation as floodwaters remain in several areas. The state government is currently running 54 relief camps and relief distribution centres across the affected districts. Around 13,771 people are staying in these camps while relief materials continue to be distributed.
What Is The Impact On Agriculture?
The floods have submerged around 15,422 hectares of agricultural land, affecting crops across the region. Officials also said the Dhansiri River continues to flow above the danger mark at Numaligarh in Golaghat district.
