The flood situation in Assam worsened on Wednesday after continuous rainfall claimed 21 more lives in the last 24 hours, taking this year’s flood death toll to 31. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), more than 5.64 lakh people have been affected across 12 districts, while rescue and relief operations remain underway. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also forecast more rainfall over the coming days, raising concerns that the situation could deteriorate further.
Of the latest fatalities, 13 were reported from Sivasagar, including four women and two children. Charaideo recorded five deaths, while Golaghat and Jorhat reported two and one fatalities, respectively.
The floods have affected over 5.64 lakh people across 12 districts – Biswanath, Charaideo, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Jorhat, Kamrup, Kamrup Metropolitan, Karbi Anglong, Nagaon, Sivasagar and Tinsukia. Sivasagar remains the worst-hit district, with nearly 3.6 lakh people affected, followed by Jorhat with around 88,000 and Charaideo with more than 72,500 residents impacted.
Which Rivers Are Flowing Above The Danger Mark?
The Brahmaputra River is flowing above the danger mark at Neamatighat. Its tributaries, including the Buridihing River at Khowang and the Dhansiri River at Golaghat and Numaligarh, are also above danger levels. The ASDMA said the Dikhou River in Sivasagar and the Disang River at Nanglamuraghat are flowing above their highest flood levels.
What Is The Latest Weather Forecast?
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Assam and forecast thunderstorms and heavy rainfall at isolated places over the next four days. The weather department has advised residents to remain alert and stay updated on the latest weather warnings.
How Are Rescue And Relief Operations Being Carried Out?
Authorities are operating 273 relief camps and relief distribution centres across 10 districts, where 12,284 displaced people are currently staying. The Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Fire and Emergency Services, police and civil administration have rescued more than 6,000 people from flood-affected areas in Charaideo, Golaghat, Jorhat and Sivasagar.
What Relief Has Been Provided?
During the past 24 hours, authorities distributed:
•   5,011.07 quintals of rice
•   956.53 quintals of dal
•   265.18 quintals of salt
•   20,115.42 litres of mustard oil
The assistance was provided to families affected by the floods across different districts.
How Extensive Is The Damage?
The ASDMA said 872 villages remain flooded, while 24,210 hectares of agricultural land have been damaged. Floodwaters have also damaged roads, bridges, embankments and other public infrastructure. In addition, more than 1.85 lakh domestic animals and poultry have been affected by the floods.
