The flood situation in Assam remained critical on Wednesday as continuous overnight rain raised fears of fresh flooding in several low-lying areas. The death toll has climbed to 89, while more than 1.22 lakh people remain affected across five districts. Relief and rescue operations are continuing.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the Dhansiri River at Numaligarh in Golaghat district remains in a severe flood situation, prompting authorities to issue safety warnings.
Sivasagar is the worst hit district, with nearly 60,000 people affected, followed by Charaideo with over 31,000 and Jorhat with nearly 20,000 affected residents. The death toll rose to 89 after two more people lost their lives in the past 24 hours. The latest fatalities were reported from Sivasagar and Golaghat districts, ASDMA said.
How Is The Government Responding?
The state administration is currently operating 55 relief camps and relief distribution centres across four districts. A total of 17,857 displaced people are staying in these relief camps. Medical teams, veterinary staff and disaster response agencies continue to carry out rescue, relief and rehabilitation work in the affected areas. Meanwhile, Union Health Minister JP Nadda is scheduled to visit the flood hit regions to review the situation and assess ongoing relief efforts.
What Damage Have The Floods Caused?
The floods have submerged 15,342.92 hectares of agricultural land, causing significant losses to farmers. The disaster has also affected 26,575 domestic animals and poultry. Apart from crops, the floods have damaged roads, embankments, houses, schools and other public infrastructure across several districts.
What Advisory Has Been Issued?
Authorities have advised residents to stay away from the Dhansiri River, as water levels continue to rise. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority has urged people living near the river and flood prone areas to remain alert and follow official instructions.
