The flood crisis in Assam continues to worsen, claiming more lives and affecting over 1.68 lakh people across 15 districts. Rescue and relief efforts remain underway as authorities work to assist displaced families, while the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more rainfall in the coming days, raising concerns over the flood situation.
What Is The Latest Flood Situation In Assam?
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), two more people died in the last 24 hours, taking this year’s flood-related death toll to 97. The latest fatalities were reported from Golaghat and Udalguri districts. More than 1.68 lakh people have been affected across 15 districts, including Golaghat, Sivasagar, Udalguri, Kamrup Metropolitan, Nagaon, Kamrup, Darrang, Sonitpur, Hojai, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Jorhat, Charaideo, Karbi Anglong and Dhemaji. In a post on X, the ASDMA said flood conditions continue to impact several parts of the state, with relief camps and distribution centres providing assistance to affected residents.
Which Districts Are The Worst Affected By The Assam Floods?
Golaghat remains the worst-hit district, with nearly 54,000 people affected, followed by Sivasagar with over 49,000 and Jorhat with around 27,000 affected residents. The number of people impacted has increased from around 1.6 lakh across 14 districts a day earlier, highlighting the deteriorating flood situation.
The ASDMA said 133 relief camps and relief distribution centres are currently operational across six districts, providing shelter and essential assistance to around 45,000 displaced people. Floodwaters have inundated 481 villages and damaged more than 14,382 hectares of agricultural land. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and carry out rescue and rehabilitation efforts in the affected areas.
The Dhansiri River continues to flow above the danger level at Numaligarh in Golaghat district. The ASDMA has urged residents to stay away from the river and avoid entering low lying or vulnerable areas as water levels remain high.
When Will Schools Reopen In Assam’s Flood-Hit Districts?
The Assam government has decided to resume academic classes in flood affected districts such as Sivasagar and Charaideo from August 10 to minimise disruption to students education. State Education Minister Ranoj Pegu said schools that are safe and accessible will reopen, while institutions that remain damaged or inaccessible will stay closed until conditions improve. Students from such schools will be provided with alternative arrangements to continue their studies.
What Is The IMD Weather Forecast For Assam?
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), isolated to scattered rainfall is likely over Assam and Meghalaya between August 8 and August 11. The weather agency has also forecast fairly widespread to widespread rainfall over Assam and Meghalaya on August 6-7 and August 12. In addition, isolated thunderstorms and lightning are expected across Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura between August 6 and August 10, prompting authorities to advise people to remain alert.
