Northeast India on Alert: An earthquake of 3.9 magnitudes shook Assam’s Udalguri district Thursday night, barely four days after an earthquake with a 5.1 magnitude hit the Morigaon region. Earthquake waves were also felt in other parts of Assam which include the capital city, Guwahati though there have been no reports of deaths and damages.

A 3.9 magnitude earthquake was experienced in Udalguri district of Assam just about 7:30 pm on Thursday. The focus of the earthquake was found to be shallow, only 10 km beneath the surface. Within the region of Assam itself, people experienced tremors in Guwahati as well. Even though the earth-shaking experience was unnerving enough, there were no injuries or damages.

Earlier Shocks in the Week

Only three days back, the area experienced a far stronger tremor. On Monday morning with a 5.1-magnitude quake struck Morigaon district with a depth of 50 kilometers. This incident resulted in light damage to buildings and injured at least three people in Morigaon, Nalbari, Sonitpur and Nagaon districts. Even outside Assam, shaking was recorded in parts of Meghalaya and Tripura.

Northeast India’s Seismic Reality

The whole Northeast is present on earthquake fault lines because of the collision between the Indian plate and the Eurasian plate. This means that Assam, Tripura and Meghalaya are very sensitive to seismic activities because of the nature of this collision. The pattern that is exhibited this week is an indication that this process is in no way random but is driven by some force.

Earthquake Preparedness & Resilience

Earthquakes cannot be prevented in a particular region of the world, but preparations need to be made in such a manner that people’s lives are saved. It can also help safeguard people’s property. Local authorities have also asked people to act in accordance with safety measures so that their lives are not in danger when an earthquake takes place. It is also important to take measures so that people are prepared for the next earthquake.
