A violent clash between the Bodo and Adivasi communities in Assam’s Kokrajhar district has left two people dead and forced a heavy security response, including deployment of the Indian Army.

The unrest began after a road accident triggered mob violence, quickly escalating into broader clashes that saw roads blocked, property torched, and law enforcement personnel injured. Security forces have tightened measures as authorities work to restore calm.

What Triggered the Assam Kokrajhar Violence?

The trouble began late on Monday night when a vehicle carrying three men from the Bodo community reportedly struck two Adivasi persons on Mansingh Road near the Karigaon police outpost. Allegations of assault by nearby villagers followed, and the vehicle was set ablaze.

Sikhna Jwhwlao Bismit died at the scene, and Sunil Murmu later succumbed to injuries in hospital. Three others remain hospitalised. What started as a local road incident quickly turned into group confrontations, with both sides taking to the streets in anger and frustration.

Assam Violence Escalation: Clashes, Arson, & Road Blockades

On Tuesday, tensions flared widely. Members of both communities blocked the National Highway near Karigaon, burning tyres and vandalising infrastructure. Protestors reportedly torched several houses, a government office, and even attacked the Karigaon police outpost, forcing police to respond with baton charges and tear gas to control the situation.

Security forces say several officers were injured during the clashes, though the situation has since stabilized somewhat under heavy guard.

Assam Violence: Army Deployment & Security Response

In response to the deteriorating law and order situation, the Indian Army was deployed in sensitive pockets of Kokrajhar to assist state forces. Four Army columns conducted joint patrols with district officials and carried out flag marches to reassure communities and deter further violence.

The Rapid Action Force (RAF) and central reserve units are also on the ground, and prohibitory orders have been imposed across Kokrajhar under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023. Authorities say these measures aim to prevent fresh flare-ups while peace talks continue behind the scenes.

Assam Violence: Internet Suspended to Prevent Rumour Spread

Officials have temporarily suspended mobile internet and data services in Kokrajhar and neighbouring Chirang districts to curb misinformation and stop inflammatory messages from exacerbating tensions. Voice calls and landline broadband remain operational.

The government invoked provisions of the Indian Telegraph Act to impose these restrictions, which remain in effect until further notice. Police and administration officials say this step is vital to avoid panic and prevent social media from fueling unrest.

Assam Violence: Relief & Displacement

The Kokrajhar district administration has set up relief camps at Karigaon High School and Gwajanpuri Amanpara High School to shelter residents who fled their homes fearing violence.

Both communities have reported displacement, and authorities are providing food, water, and medical support. Local leaders and police officials have appealed to the public to remain calm and avoid rumours, stressing that peace and normalcy must return as quickly as possible.

Assam Violence: Ongoing Investigations & Official Statements

Police have detained several people in connection with the violence as they continue investigating the origins and dynamics of the conflict. Authorities say they are looking into all angles, including the initial collision, mob reaction, and the rapid escalation that followed.

While normalcy has improved, tensions remain high. Law enforcement agencies are urging residents not to spread unverified information that could reignite hostilities.
