Russian President Vladimir Putin’s Aurus Senat is back in the spotlight as he arrives in New Delhi for his 2026 India visit. The Russian-made luxury limousine is being used as part of Putin’s security arrangements in the capital, rather than relying solely on an Indian government vehicle.

Often described as a “fortress on wheels” or Russia’s answer to ultra-secure presidential cars, the Senat combines a huge luxury-limousine cabin with extensive ballistic and blast protection. AURUS itself describes the Senat as the official limousine of the Russian president.

What Is The Aurus Senat?

The Aurus Senat is a Russian luxury sedan developed under the country’s Kortezh project, with AURUS working alongside Russia’s NAMI research institute and other partners.

The car became Putin’s official presidential vehicle in 2018, replacing the Mercedes-Benz S 600 Pullman previously used for presidential duties.

The Senat is not simply a luxury car. The presidential version has been extensively modified for security, and many details of Putin’s exact vehicle remain classified.

Aurus Senat Engine And Performance

The standard Senat’s powertrain is based around a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 hybrid engine.

Specification Aurus Senat
Engine 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8
Hybrid motor Electric motor
Petrol engine power 598 hp
Electric motor power 62 hp
Torque 880 Nm
Gearbox 9-speed automatic
Drive All-wheel drive
Top speed Up to 250 km/h, depending on version
0-100 km/h Around 6 seconds, depending on version

AURUS’s official specifications list 598 hp and 880 Nm, with a 9-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The official Senat page also lists a 250 km/h maximum speed and 0-100 km/h acceleration in about six seconds for the standard specification.

The heavily armoured presidential version is substantially heavier, so its real-world acceleration and maximum speed are different from the civilian model. Some reports put the armoured version at around 160 km/h, reflecting its enormous weight and security-focused engineering.

How Big Is Putin’s Aurus Senat?

The standard long Senat is already enormous.

AURUS lists the Senat Long at:

  • Length: 6,130 mm
  • Width: 2,020 mm
  • Height: 1,715 mm
  • Wheelbase: 3,800 mm
  • Ground clearance: 200 mm
  • Curb weight: 3,545 kg
  • Gross weight: 3,910 kg

These figures come from AURUS’s official Senat Long specification sheet.

The presidential armoured limousine is substantially heavier than the regular car because of its armour, reinforced structure, ballistic glass, and other security equipment.

Why Is The Aurus Senat Called A ‘Fortress On Wheels’?

This is where the Senat becomes very different from a conventional luxury limousine.

The armoured version has been reported to feature VR8/VR10-level ballistic protection, reinforced multi-layer glass, blast-resistant protection and run-flat tyres. AURUS itself confirms that the Senat limousine has VR8/VR10 ballistic protection.

Reported security features include:

  • Ballistic protection against high-calibre and armour-piercing rounds
  • Reinforced ballistic glass
  • Blast-resistant underbody
  • Run-flat tyres
  • Reinforced fuel tank
  • Fire-suppression system
  • Independent air filtration
  • Emergency oxygen supply
  • Emergency exits
  • Secure communications equipment

Reports have described the presidential version as capable of protecting its occupants from serious ballistic and explosive threats. However, the exact armour composition and complete protection specifications are not publicly disclosed, so claims about what specific weapons it can withstand should be treated cautiously.

Is The Aurus Senat Bulletproof And Blast Resistant?

Yes, the armoured presidential version is designed for ballistic and blast protection.

Its protective package reportedly includes thick multi-layer ballistic glazing, an armoured passenger compartment and reinforced underbody protection.

Some reports put the glass thickness at approximately 6 cm. Run-flat tyres are designed to allow the vehicle to continue moving even after tyre damage.

The cabin can also be isolated from the outside environment, with independent filtration and oxygen systems intended to protect in situations involving toxic or contaminated air.

Aurus Senat Interior: Luxury Inside The Armoured Car

Despite its focus on protection, the Senat is designed as a high-end executive limousine.

Reported and documented features include:

  • Premium leather upholstery
  • Wood trim
  • Heated and ventilated rear seats
  • Massage functions
  • Individual passenger controls
  • Infotainment screens
  • Climate control
  • Privacy partition
  • Refrigerator
  • Fold-out tables
  • Secure communications

The idea is to allow a head of state to work, communicate, and travel comfortably while remaining inside a heavily protected cabin.

Aurus Senat Price In India: How Much Does Putin’s Car Cost?

This is where there is considerable confusion online.

The civilian Senat has been quoted at around 18 million Russian rubles, with Indian media reports putting that at roughly ₹2.5 crore, although the rupee equivalent changes with exchange rates, and this is not an Indian on-road price.

Putin’s customised armoured presidential car is far more expensive because of its specialised security equipment. Indian reports have previously estimated the customised version at around ₹5.5 crore or more, but the actual cost of Putin’s specific vehicle is not officially disclosed and should not be treated as a confirmed retail price.

There is also no established official Indian showroom price for Putin’s presidential armoured Senat.

Can You Buy Putin’s Aurus Senat In India?

Not the presidential version.

A limited civilian Senat is available in some markets, but Putin’s customised armoured state limousine is not a normal production car available to private buyers. Security modifications and classified equipment distinguish it from the civilian model.

AURUS currently lists official sales/service operations in Russia and also has a Dubai presence, but that does not mean Putin’s presidential specification is commercially available.

Aurus Senat Vs Rolls-Royce And Mercedes-Maybach

The Senat is often compared with cars such as Rolls-Royce and Mercedes-Maybach because of its size and luxury.

However, its primary purpose is different.

A Rolls-Royce or Mercedes-Maybach is primarily a luxury executive vehicle, while Putin’s Senat is a state limousine engineered around security, communications and survivability.

That is why its enormous weight, reinforced body, ballistic glass, run-flat tyres and protective systems matter more than conventional luxury-car specifications.

Why Is Putin Bringing The Aurus Senat To Delhi?

Putin has historically travelled with his own heavily secured presidential vehicles during overseas visits. Reports surrounding his India visits have highlighted that the Russian leader does not simply switch to a standard host-country luxury car.

For the current New Delhi visit, Putin arrived for the BRICS Summit, with India-Russia talks focusing on areas including trade, energy and defence cooperation.

The use of the Aurus therefore has both a security and protocol significance: it gives the Russian presidential security team control over the vehicle and its specialised protective systems.
