An 82 year old man from Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district was left stunned after his bank account showed a balance of nearly Rs 759 crore when he visited a Common Service Centre (CSC) to withdraw his monthly old-age pension. The incident took place on July 12, 2026, when Kameshwar Mishra, a resident of Thatiya Siho village in Muzaffarpur district, visited a CSC to withdraw his monthly Rs 1,100 old age pension. After withdrawing the amount, he requested a balance enquiry slip. To his shock, the receipt showed an available balance of Rs 7,59,69,51,951.16, nearly Rs 759 crore,leaving both him and the CSC operator astonished.
Mishra’s disabled son, who also receives a government disability pension, was accompanying him. When the CSC operator checked his son’s bank account, it too reportedly displayed an unusually large balance. According to the family, the combined amount shown in both accounts exceeded Rs 1,500 crore.
According to local reports, the massive balance remained visible for only about 10 minutes. Soon after the matter was reported, the amount disappeared from both accounts, and the balances returned to normal. Mishra said he could not understand how such a huge amount had appeared in his account. He urged the bank and the concerned authorities to investigate the incident and rectify the error if necessary, adding that he brought the matter to public attention so officials could verify the records.
What Caused The Rs 759 Crore Balance?
Bank officials later clarified that the incident was caused by a technical software glitch. According to initial findings, the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system temporarily malfunctioned during heavy server activity. As a result, an internal system sequence number was mistakenly displayed as the account balance on the printed receipt. Officials confirmed that no actual money was credited to either account and the amount was never available for withdrawal.
