New Delhi: Director General of the Border Security Force (BSF) Praveen Kumar, IPS, undertook a four-day visit to the highly sensitive coastal stretches of the Indo-Bangladesh border in the Sundarban Delta from July 11 to 14 to review the operational preparedness of troops, assess border infrastructure and evaluate coordination among various security and civil agencies involved in border management.
During his visit, the BSF chief carried out a comprehensive review of the operational readiness of personnel deployed across the difficult riverine and coastal terrain of the deep Sundarbans. He also assessed the effectiveness of the existing border security grid and examined the progress of the ongoing border fencing works, which are aimed at strengthening surveillance capabilities and preventing cross-border crimes, illegal infiltration and other security-related threats.
As part of his outreach programme, the Director General interacted with local residents and government officials serving in the border region. He thanked the border communities for their continued cooperation and support to the BSF in safeguarding the frontier, while reiterating the force’s commitment to fostering stronger public engagement and building deeper trust and cooperation with people residing in border villages.
The BSF chief also spent time with the personnel deployed at border outposts, staying alongside the “Seema Praharis” and interacting closely with troops serving in the geographically demanding and inhospitable conditions of the Sundarbans. He praised their unwavering dedication, professionalism and resilience despite the challenging operational environment, and urged them to continue maintaining the highest standards of integrity, discipline and commitment while carrying out the force’s mandate of protecting the nation’s borders.
Moreover, Kumar also chaired a high-level security review meeting attended by all key stakeholders associated with border management. The discussions focused on reviewing the progress of the border fencing project, evaluating the overall border management mechanism and identifying measures to strengthen inter-agency coordination for building a more robust and integrated border security architecture along the Indo-Bangladesh frontier.
The visit assumes significance as the BSF continues to strengthen surveillance, operational capabilities and border infrastructure along vulnerable stretches of the Indo-Bangladesh border, particularly in the ecologically sensitive and strategically important Sundarbans region. The unique riverine landscape, dense mangrove forests and difficult terrain continue to pose significant operational challenges, making enhanced coordination, infrastructure development and sustained vigilance crucial for effective border security.
