Why Is the Budget Happening on a Sunday?

February 1, 2026, falls on a Sunday. Since the late Finance Minister Arun Jaitley established the practice in 2017, the full Union Budget has been presented on February 1 each year, regardless of the weekday. This is the first instance where that date is a Sunday.

Budget 2026: Full Schedule

The 2026 Budget Session is organised in two phases, separated by a month-long recess to allow detailed examination of departmental expenditure.

Phase 1: Presentation and General Discussion

  • Dates: January 28 to February 13, 2026.
  • Focus: This phase focuses on the main opening events and preliminary debates.
  • January 28: The session started with the President’s Address to a joint sitting of both Houses.
  • January 29: The Economic Survey 2025–26 was tabled before Parliament.
  • February 1: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presents the Union Budget 2026–27.

Subsequent Days: General discussions on the Budget and the Motion of Thanks on the President's address. 

Parliamentary Recess

  • Dates: February 14 to March 8, 2026.
  • Purpose: During this period, the Houses do not meet. Instead, Department-related Parliamentary Standing Committees closely examine the Demands for Grants of various ministries and departments.

Phase 2: Scrutiny and Passing of Bills

  • Dates: March 9 to April 2, 2026.
  • Focus: This final phase centres on Parliament approving the government’s financial proposals.
  • Detailed Scrutiny: Members discuss and vote on the Demands for Grants based on committee reports.
  • Passing of Bills: The phase ends with the passage of the Appropriation Bill, allowing government spending, and the Finance Bill, which puts tax proposals into effect, formally completing the Budget process.

Presentation Details

Total Sittings: The session will have 30 sittings spread over 65 days, with 13 sittings in the first phase and 17 in the second.

Sunday Presentation: The NSE and BSE will hold regular live trading from 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM to coincide with the budget announcement, despite the fact that it is a Sunday.

When Did the Budget-Making Begin for 2026?

The process for the 2026-27 budget started in August 2025. It begins with a budget circular sent to ministries for estimates, followed by pre-budget talks and consultations with experts and the public.
